Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing in regards to my part-time course admission in your college. I would like to go ahead and switch my current enrollment to another part-time course.
The course which I booked was Home Science and Arts. It was mainly about paintings, decorating and interior designing. Since it was part-time, an enrollment fee was charged for $100.
Actually, recently I received a letter from one of the organization to join as an intern - Accounts Payable. My manager suggested to take admission in Database course which could be beneficial in a long-term process for my company. I would appreciate if you could provide more details on this. Also, could you please confirm if enrollment fee gets waived off or applies again?
Kindly let me know if I can swap my course or start looking for other colleges.
Your sincerely,
Neha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
You have addressed all three bullet points: identifying the course, explaining the reason for cancellation, and inquiring about a new course. However, the letter is slightly under the 150-word minimum, which impacts the development of your ideas. While the purpose is clear, the explanation regarding the internship and the request for a new course could have been expanded to provide more context and ensure the letter meets the length requirement. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks a slightly more professional polish in the closing request.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Since' and 'Also', to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit abrupt, and the overall flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. Paragraphing is used correctly, which helps the reader follow your train of thought, but the connection between the internship offer and the specific request for a database course could be more smoothly integrated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'enrollment', 'beneficial', and 'waived'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'take admission in' (should be 'enroll in') and 'one of the organization' (should be 'one of the organizations'). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. To improve, focus on more natural collocations and ensure pluralization is consistent.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'my manager suggested to take admission' (should be 'suggested that I enroll' or 'suggested taking'), and 'enrollment fee gets waived off' (should be 'is waived'). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are minor slips in phrasing. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the errors do not impede communication, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed to reach a higher band.
