IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to request the cancellation of a part-time course at Conestoga College that I enrolled for the spring 2027 term last month.
I am Malleswari Katari, and I planned to join the French language proficiency course that is going to commence in January 2027. However, I decided not to move forward with this course because of the recent organisation restructure. It has demanded that I gain skills in business analysis and adapting the decision making choices along with the stakeholders. Learning these not only enhances my professional skill set but also helps me qualify for a promotion as a senior business system analyst that my company is offering.
I would kindly request that you accept my cancellation of the course that I had taken up for the intake. Additionally, I would like to enrol in the business course and would like to learn more about this. Specifically, the following
When is the course starting?
What is the duration of the course?
What is the fee structure?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely
Malleswari Katari

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the French language course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation related to professional development, and included specific questions regarding a potential alternative business course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the transition between the cancellation and the inquiry about the new course is slightly more seamless, as the shift feels a bit abrupt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the purpose of the letter from the specific details and the subsequent inquiry. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'However' and 'Additionally,' to link your ideas. However, the flow could be improved by using more varied transition markers. For instance, the list of questions at the end is a bit mechanical; integrating these into a full sentence would improve the overall cohesion of the final paragraph.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'proficiency,' 'commence,' 'stakeholders,' and 'professional skill set.' There are some minor issues with collocation, such as 'adapting the decision making choices,' which sounds slightly unnatural. Additionally, 'taken up for the intake' is a bit redundant. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and professionally. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations in a business context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'enrolled for the spring 2027 term' (should be 'enrolled in') and 'organisation restructure' (should be 'organizational restructure'). The sentence 'It has demanded that I gain skills...' is a bit awkward in its construction. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences are clear and easy to follow. Punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
