IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing to request the cancellation of a part-time course at Conestoga College that I enrolled in the spring 2027 term last month.
I am Malleswari Katari, and I planned to join the French language proficiency course that is going to commence in January 2027. However, I decided not to move forward with this course because of the recent organisational restructure. It has demanded that I gain skills in business analysis and refining the decision making choices along with the stakeholders. Learning these not only enhances my professional skill set but also helps me qualify for a promotion as a senior business system analyst that my company is offering.
I would kindly request that you accept my cancellation of the course that I had taken up for the intake. Additionally, I would like to enroll in the business course and would like to learn more about this. Specifically, the following.
When is the course starting?
What is the duration of the course?
What is the fee structure?
Looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours Sincerely,
Malleswari Katari

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the French language course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation related to professional development, and included specific questions regarding a potential new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a course booking cancellation. You have maintained a consistent and professional position throughout the letter, ensuring the reader understands both your current situation and your future intentions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: the introduction states the purpose, the body explains the situation, and the final section includes the inquiry and closing. You have used cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Additionally,' and 'Specifically' to link your thoughts effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. While the transition between the explanation of the restructure and the request for information is functional, slightly more sophisticated linking could further enhance the flow, but overall, the structure is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'organisational restructure,' 'professional skill set,' and 'stakeholders.' There are no significant errors in word choice that impede meaning. While the vocabulary is sufficient and accurate, incorporating a few more precise collocations or less common academic/professional terms could elevate the score further. For instance, instead of 'taken up for the intake,' a more natural phrasing would be 'enrolled in the program.' Overall, your lexical control is solid and fits the requirements of the task well.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of tense is generally accurate, such as in 'that is going to commence' and 'that I had taken up.' There are minor slips, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'refining the decision making choices along with the stakeholders,' which could be more concisely expressed. Punctuation is generally correct, and the formal structure of the letter is well-maintained. The grammar is sufficiently accurate to ensure clear communication throughout the response.
