Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Lovepreet Kaur and last month, I registered for a part-time six-month course to learn French language. However, I am writing this letter to request the cancellation of my course at your college due to some reasons.

Now, Not only I am facing financial circumstances but also have some family responsibilities, which are preventing me from continuing the part-time course. Moreover, I have to bear high expenses to continue this course.

In addition, the course fees are quite expensive for me at present. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could suggest a more affordable alternative.

For this reason, I would appreciate it if you could transfer my enrolment to another course that is more convenient and easily accessible for me. I would also be grateful if you could inform me about the available options and any additional charges involved.

I am looking forward your response.

yours' faithfully,

Lovepreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task. You clearly identified the course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation, and made a specific request regarding an alternative. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation and your requirements clearly. To reach a higher band, ensure that the reasons for cancellation are distinct rather than repetitive, as the mention of financial circumstances and high expenses overlap significantly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to the explanation and finally the request. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate these ideas. You have used some cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'In addition' to link your sentences. While the flow is generally good, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases further and ensure that the connection between the financial issues and the request for a different course is more fluidly integrated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for this task, such as 'registered', 'enrolment', and 'financial circumstances'. The language is generally clear and appropriate for a formal context. However, there are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'bear high expenses' and 'easily accessible'. While these do not impede communication, they prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Expanding your range to include more precise academic or formal collocations would enhance the quality of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as the word order in 'Not only I am facing' (which should be 'Not only am I facing') and the incorrect sign-off 'yours' faithfully' (which should be 'Yours faithfully'). Additionally, there is a missing preposition in 'looking forward your response' (should be 'looking forward to your response'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not significantly impede the reader's understanding of your message.
