IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request the cancellation of my booking for the part-time business English course, which is due to begin next month. I enrolled in this course two weeks ago and was looking forward to improving my communication skills for my future career.

Unfortunately, I have recently being offered an important assignment work that requires me to travel frequently over the next few months. As a result, I was not able to attend the classes regularly or make most of the course. I would therefore be grateful if you could cancel my current booking and let me know whether I am eligible for a refund or credit towards the future course.

I am still keen to study at your college once my schedule becomes less demanding. Could you please give me some advice about any part-time evening course which is likely to be available in the coming months? I would particularly appreciate information about course fees, dates, and enrollment procedures.

Thank you for your understanding. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Ahsan Amin

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the course, provided a logical reason for the cancellation (work travel), and made a specific request for information regarding future courses. The tone is consistently appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, and the transition between the cancellation request and the inquiry about future courses is smooth. You have used cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'As a result', and 'I would therefore be grateful' effectively to link your ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure follows standard formal letter conventions, making the text easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal context, such as 'enrolled', 'eligible', 'demanding', and 'appreciate'. The word choices are generally accurate and natural. There are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication. While the vocabulary is functional and precise, it could be slightly more varied to reach the highest band, but it is certainly sufficient for a Band 7.0+ level in this context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with generally good control. However, there are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I have recently being offered' (should be 'been') and 'the future course' (the article 'the' is unnecessary here). Additionally, 'make most of the course' is slightly awkward; 'make the most of' would be more idiomatic. Despite these minor errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation and formal tone is consistent.
