Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
My name is Adam Gilbert and I recently booked a part-time course on Data Analytics at your prestigious college. Unfortunately, I would like to cancel the booking as I would not like to pursue this course.
I was under impression that Data Analytics course will help me secure a job, but I have discussed it with various employers and I have found out that the trend of Data Analytics is reducing and there is actually a scarcity of jobs in this field.
The employers and some of my friends have actually suggested to do a course on Artificial Intelligence. Therefore, I would like to request the details about this course. If you could share some details about the course on Artificial Intelligence like what topics are covered. I am especially interested in agent skills, deployment of agents and agent frameworks.
I would be grateful if you could cancel my previous booking of Data Analytics course and share the details about Artificial Intelligence course.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Gilbert

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked, provided a logical reason for the cancellation, and effectively inquired about an alternative course in Artificial Intelligence. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout. You have fully satisfied the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the issue to the explanation and finally the request for information. You have used appropriate paragraphing and cohesive devices such as 'Unfortunately', 'Therefore', and 'If you could' to link your ideas. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal context, such as 'prestigious', 'pursue', and 'scarcity'. There is a minor collocation error in the phrase 'suggested to do a course', which would be more naturally expressed as 'suggested that I take a course' or 'suggested enrolling in a course'. However, your vocabulary is generally precise and effectively conveys your meaning throughout the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few minor grammatical slips, such as 'I was under impression' (missing the article 'the') and 'the trend of Data Analytics is reducing' (where 'declining' would be more accurate). Despite these occasional errors, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is strong enough to ensure that your message is communicated clearly and professionally.
