Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope your week is going good. I am here to inform you regarding the cancellation of my 6 week booked course named as Early Childhood Assistant.

However, I booked this program because I have a keen interested in socialising with little grouped kids. This course was suggested by my housemates. To be more precise, I belongs to medical departement, and I am looking for PR job, and i have a good experience in social work. In my prospective, choosing this program is lucrative for career job opportunity. But unfortunately, one of my cousin brother changed my mind. She said, choose the PSW (personal support worker) is more fruitful for your upcoming future.

Consequently, I have to switch my 6 week ECA program to 6 month PSW program. Kindly make the arrangements for my cancellation. I will be very thankful to you.

Thanks for your precious time for my mail.

Your faithful,

Saksham.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the course name is identified, the reason for cancellation is provided, and a request to switch courses is made. However, the tone is inconsistent and occasionally inappropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. For example, mentioning 'my cousin brother changed my mind' is too informal and lacks the professional register required for this task. Additionally, the explanation for the cancellation is somewhat confusing and lacks clarity regarding the professional necessity of the change. To improve, ensure the tone remains formal throughout and that the reasons provided are concise and professional.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is sometimes mechanical or misused. For instance, the transition 'However' at the start of the second paragraph is illogical as it does not contrast with the previous sentence. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the connection between the medical background and the sudden change of heart due to a cousin's advice is disjointed. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but contains several errors in word choice and collocation. Phrases such as 'little grouped kids' and 'prospective' (used instead of 'perspective') are unnatural or incorrect. The term 'lucrative for career job opportunity' is also awkward. While the student attempts to use more complex vocabulary, the lack of precision often hinders the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on using collocations correctly and avoiding informal or non-standard phrasing. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more precise professional terms would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('I belongs to', 'choose the PSW... is more fruitful') and incorrect pronoun usage ('She said' referring to a cousin brother). The sentence structures are mostly simple, with some attempts at complex sentences that are often marred by errors. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is inconsistent. To improve, focus on basic subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex sentences are constructed accurately. Proofreading for common errors like article usage and verb tense consistency would significantly improve the quality of the writing.
