Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing this letter that I want to cancel my part-time course which I recently booked.
Last week, I booked Marketing course and I have paid half fee for this course. I have completed Business Management study and decided to choose this course because it is related to study.
I want to cancel this course because it is expensive for me as well as in your college there is Human Resource course is available which is more related to my study and there are a lot of opportunities in future career. That time I did not know it is available. It is less expensive rather than marketing course.
I would appreciate if you could explain how I can change my course as well as how convert my fees in new course. Could you please suggest me about online process and steps which I need to follow for new one.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your response.
Yours faithfully,
Jagjit Kaur.

| Criterion | Band |

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course you booked (Marketing), explained your reason for cancellation (financial constraints and a preference for the Human Resource course), and requested information on how to switch to the new course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, meeting the requirements of the task effectively. To improve further, ensure that you provide slightly more specific details in your explanation to fully flesh out the context, although your current response is sufficient for a Band 6.5-7.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your train of thought. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'because', 'as well as', and 'therefore' (implied). However, the flow between some sentences is slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that transitions between paragraphs are smoother. For example, instead of starting a new paragraph with 'I want to cancel', you could use a transitional phrase to connect the previous information to your request.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows you to communicate your message clearly. You use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'part-time course', 'administrator', and 'fees'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'convert my fees in new course' (should be 'transfer my fees to the new course') and 'less expensive rather than' (should be 'less expensive than'). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for formal correspondence. Expanding your range of vocabulary will help you convey your ideas with more sophistication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter that I want to cancel' (should be 'I am writing to inform you that I wish to cancel') and 'there is Human Resource course is available' (should be 'there is a Human Resource course available'). There are also minor issues with articles and prepositions. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
