IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to cancel my enrollment for the part-time "Food Science" course because of the in-person classes. I was mistaken about it being online, but due to my work timings I cannot attend it offline.

My registration was done in the course starting May 2026. It is major in Food Science which is about to led by Professor Parikh. The class timings are 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and is to be conducted only during weekends.

I would like to withdraw my name because I was expecting it to be online as I am full-time working professional. However, when I got the schedule it stated to attend it in-person which will be quite difficult for me as it clashes with my work hours. Additionally, the classes are also longer than my expectations.

I would be grateful if you could suggest me some other part-time and online courses at your college relevant to same subject.

I hope you understand my concern and cancel my enrollment.

Yours sincerely,

Krupa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the course, explained the reason for cancellation (the misunderstanding regarding the course format), and requested information about alternative online options. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands your situation clearly. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details provided are consistent; for instance, you mention the course is on weekends, but then state it clashes with your work hours, which might be confusing if you work a standard Monday-to-Friday schedule. Overall, the task is fully accomplished.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the request, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'However' to link your ideas. To improve, try to vary your transitions further and ensure that the progression between sentences is smoother. For example, the second paragraph feels slightly disconnected from the first. Using more sophisticated linking phrases would help elevate the flow of the letter to a higher level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'full-time working professional' and 'withdraw my name' are appropriate for the context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'about to led by' (should be 'about to be led by') and 'relevant to same subject' (should be 'relevant to the same subject'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise' at a higher band level. Expanding your range of formal academic collocations would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'suggest me some other' (should be 'suggest some other courses to me') and 'it stated to attend it in-person' (should be 'it stated that it would be held in-person'). The error 'is to be conducted' is also slightly awkward in this context. You have good control over basic structures, but more attention to verb patterns and prepositional usage is needed to minimize these frequent, though non-impeding, errors.
