Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking for a course that I recently enrolled for.
I registered myself for the part-time course Basics of Acoustics by Professor Atkins. Lessons are offered Monday through Friday on campus in Green Hall 1.
The reason for cancellation is, the inability to manage my schedule. As a full time student, I am struggling to meet my assignment and project deadlines. Hence, It is not possible for me to take out time for non academic courses like these.
I am finding Mechanics very difficult therefore, I am interested in joining the academic course - Mechanics in Motion. Could you please let me know if my previous credits could be transferred to this course? If not then please let me know the enrollment procedure.
Thank you for your cooperation. I look forward to your assistance in this matter.
Yours faithfully,
Amanda Cyrus

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully covers all bullet points of the task. The student clearly identifies the course they booked ('Basics of Acoustics by Professor Atkins'), explains the reason for cancellation ('the inability to manage my schedule' due to being a full-time student), and successfully asks about booking a different course ('Mechanics in Motion') while inquiring about credit transfers. The purpose of the letter is evident throughout, and an appropriate semi-formal tone is maintained. Ideas are well-extended and directly address the prompts. The task is fully accomplished without any omissions, resulting in a strong performance for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are grouped logically into distinct paragraphs, starting with the statement of purpose, followed by details of the booking, the explanation for cancellation, the request for a new course, and finally a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used appropriately, such as 'Hence' and referencing pronouns ('this course', 'These'). Paragraphing is sufficient and appropriate for a correspondence task. While cohesion is straightforward rather than complex, it effectively guides the reader through the letter without any awkward transitions or confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a formal or semi-formal request. Phrases such as 'request you to cancel', 'enrolled for', 'non academic courses', and 'enrollment procedure' are used appropriately. There are minor stylistic slips, such as the comma splice in 'The reason for cancellation is, the inability' and a slight lack of hyphenation in 'full time student'. However, these vocabulary and collocation choices do not impede communication, and the range used is sufficient to cover the topic precisely.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking for a course that I recently enrolled for.' There is generally good control of grammar and punctuation, though minor errors are present, including a punctuation slip ('Hence, It is not possible...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and complex structures are attempted with a good degree of success. The occasional punctuation and capitalisation slips do not impede overall communication.
