IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing this letter to humbly request for the cancellation of my booking in a part-time course. I recently enrolled in a part-time course in horticulture in your prestigious institution. The course will be starting next week, and I was very much excited for about a student once again.

The reason for the change is that I was confused between two courses, horticulture and agronomy and due to peer pressure I selected horticulture. However, after doing introspection for hours, I realized later that a course in agronomy would be best suited for my academic growth and job prospects in the future. Moreover, I have a farming background where I can apply my theoretical knowledge in a practical way.

I would greatly appreciate your assistance, if you can swap my booking from the horticulture course to a course in agronomy. I can pay for the cancellation fee, if there is any.

Thank you for the assistance

Kind regards,

Amitoz Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully covered all three bullet points required for this general training letter. You clearly stated which part-time course you booked (horticulture), explained why you need to cancel (confusion with agronomy, introspection, and your farming background), and asked about booking a different course (agronomy) alongside mentioning the cancellation fee. Your tone is polite and appropriate for a letter to a college administrator. The purpose of the letter is immediately clear, and your ideas are well-developed and easy to follow. To reach even higher bands, you could expand slightly more on the administrative details of the transfer, but overall, all requirements of the task are fully met in a natural and direct manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

Your letter shows a clear and logical organization. It opens with an appropriate salutation, moves into the statement of purpose and background, explains your reasons in the second paragraph, and concludes with your request and a standard sign-off. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas, such as the context of your booking versus your reasons for changing. You also use cohesive devices successfully, such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'if there is any', to guide the reader smoothly through your thoughts. Progression of ideas is clear throughout, making the letter very easy to read and follow from beginning to end.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary for this task, incorporating subject-related terms like 'horticulture', 'agronomy', 'introspection', and 'theoretical knowledge'. You attempt less common phrases with generally good success, and your word choices convey your message clearly. However, there are a few minor lexical inaccuracies, such as saying 'excited for about a student once again' which sounds slightly awkward and contains a grammatical slip. Despite this, your vocabulary is adequate to allow for precise communication, and your overall lexical control is solid for a standard general training task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I recently enrolled in a part-time course in horticulture in your prestigious institution' and 'I would greatly appreciate your assistance, if you can swap my booking...' There are several error-free sentences, and your control over punctuation is generally good. However, there are some noticeable grammatical errors, particularly 'excited for about a student once again' and unnecessary commas, such as before 'if you can swap'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent you from achieving a higher band score where control over complex structures needs to be more consistent.
