You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

With great concern, I want to state my request regarding the cancellation of my booking a part-time course at your college. This course has booked by me recently.

This was about data analysis. However, this subject concerns with the statics and classes will be in the evening. Initially, I was intereseted in it because of my research work.

Now, I need to exchange this course with the other one that is lifestyle medicine. This is related with the healthcare system by introducing modifications in our lifestyle.I find it better to know about how to change our living habits in order to maintain our good health. This is the reason I want to cancel the booking.

It is requested to cancel my booking of that course and replace it with the new one. I believe, this could help me to guide my family members to get a healthy lifestyle. I hope, you would consider my request and facilitate me. I look forward hearing from you at your earliest convinience.

Regards.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly state which course you booked (data analysis), explain why you need to cancel (because it concerns statistics and evening classes, and your interests changed), and ask about booking a different course (lifestyle medicine). The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriately formal for addressing a college administrator. All parts of the prompt are addressed satisfactorily, earning a solid band score for this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression from stating the problem to explaining the reasons and finally making the request for a replacement course. However, paragraphing is somewhat fragmented, with single-sentence paragraphs used frequently, which affects the overall flow. Cohesive devices are attempted, such as 'However' and 'Now', but referencing is occasionally slightly awkward, such as 'the other one that is lifestyle medicine'.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'data analysis', 'lifestyle medicine', and 'healthcare system'. However, there are several noticeable vocabulary and word choice errors, such as 'With great concern, I want to state my request' instead of 'write to request', 'concerns with the statics' (should be 'statistics'), and 'intereseted' (spelling). These lexical inaccuracies prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band, though communication is never impeded.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

There is a mix of simple and complex sentence structures used throughout the letter, such as 'Initially, I was interested in it because of my research work.' and 'I hope, you would consider my request and facilitate me.' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including passive voice misuse ('This course has booked by me recently' instead of 'This course was booked by me recently'), unnecessary commas ('I hope, you would consider'), and tense inconsistencies. These errors occur frequently enough to impact the overall grammatical accuracy.
