Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear sir/madfam,
I hope life is treating you well. I am writing this letter to request your assistance. Recently, I was admitted to the Pharmacy Assistant program at your college, which will begin next month.
I want to cancel this part - time course.
The main reason behind this cancellation is my busy schedule. I am working in the restaurant, and suddenly, they changed my work schedule. I request them to change my schedule so I can attend the classes. But they refused my request. This job is only the soucre of income for me, and I do not want to quit this job. It is my humble request to you to please cancel this for now, but I will take admission in the same course again with a different schedule. AS, this course is essential for me to get a job in the medical field.
I am thankful to you for this.
Yours sincerely,
Gurpreet kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the specific part-time course is clearly stated as the "Pharmacy Assistant program". Second, the reason for cancellation is explained through a change in work hours at a restaurant and the employer's refusal to accommodate class times. Third, the candidate asks about booking a different course in the future, mentioning a desire to "take admission in the same course again with a different schedule". The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a college administrator, although the greeting has a minor typo. Overall, the requirements of the task are well addressed and ideas are sufficiently developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a clear logical progression from stating the purpose of the letter to explaining the problem and finally proposing a future solution. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, the main body explanation, and the closing. Cohesive devices are generally simple but effective, such as "The main reason behind this cancellation is" and "AS, this course is essential". While referencing is mostly clear, the transition between sentences could be smoother in the second paragraph, and punctuation regarding capitalization after cohesive markers needs minor refinement. Nevertheless, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended message. The candidate attempts some less common and topic-specific vocabulary, such as "cancellation", "schedule", "admission", and "essential". However, there are some minor word-choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as the spelling error in the salutation ("madfam"), "soucre" instead of source, and the unnatural collocation "take admission" instead of "enroll". Despite these occasional errors, the range is sufficient to allow communication without significant difficulty, matching the criteria for a band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordination and coordination, such as in "Recently, I was admitted to the Pharmacy Assistant program at your college, which will begin next month." There are several grammatical errors present, including punctuation slips like the hyphen spacing in "part - time" and capitalization issues such as "AS, this course". Additionally, "I am working in the restaurant" lacks proper article usage or specificity. However, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of simple sentences are accurate. This balance of structures and error frequency fits the band 6.0 profile well.
