Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the part-time course. As I recently booked a part time course in our college but unfortunately, I want to cancel my booking.
I was very excited when I booked for music class because it is my dream to become a singer. I am thrilled to learn guitar,as it will help me in singing. When I was 15, my mother also wants the same.
After booking, when I reached home, I want to surprise her, but she denied for music classes. She wants that I can register for cooking class, instead of singing. As it will help me in the fututre because I am puzzling with the basic ingredients of the kitchen. However, it will help me in my future for my daily basis need and it is a golden chance for me to learn.
Could you please help me to change my booking. I want to take part in cooking classes rather than music classes. Please let me know, if you need any further details for registration.
I am look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Nitika

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response covers all parts of the task prompt effectively. You successfully stated which part-time course you booked ("music class" / "guitar"), explained why you need to cancel your booking due to your mother's preference, and asked about booking a different course ("cooking class"). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter to an administrator, starting with "Dear Sir or Madam" and ending with "Yours faithfully." However, some of the supporting details are a bit conversational and repetitive, such as discussing your mother's wishes extensively. To achieve a higher band, the ideas could be expressed with greater conciseness and clarity, but all three bullet points from the prompt are clearly addressed throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, with an opening, body paragraphs dealing with the background and cancellation reason, and a closing paragraph with inquiries. Cohesive devices are used, such as "However", "instead of", and "After booking", though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or awkward, like "When I was 15, my mother also wants the same." Paragraphing is generally appropriate, separating the introduction, details of the situation, and the request for change. Referencing is mostly clear, though some pronouns occasionally blur the precise relationship between clauses. Overall progression is coherent and easy to follow from the initial statement to the final request.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as "express my concern", "golden chance", and "basic ingredients of the kitchen". However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies throughout the text, such as saying "I am puzzling with the basic ingredients" instead of struggling with them, and "she denied for music classes" instead of refused or objected. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary control is sometimes compromised by literal translations or awkward phrasing. The range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, but precision is lacking in places.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as conditional or dependent clauses ("As I recently booked... but unfortunately, I want to cancel"). However, there are several grammatical errors and tense inconsistencies that detract from accuracy. For instance, mixing past and present tenses ("my mother also wants the same" instead of wanted, and "she denied for music classes"). There are also punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases and a comma splice or missing full stop around "I am look forward to hearing from you soon." While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band.
