Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding a part time course which I recently booked at your college. I am an ex student of your college and wanted to exlore more courses there so I enrolled myself in operations management. This course is about the management of day to day operations in an organzation. It helps an individual to develop skills of managing operations in any field. This also helps in team management skills, performance evaluation, etc.

Unfortunately, I want to cancel my enrollment in this course as I'll be moving to UK for better job opportunity. I was trying since long for this. As much as I wanted to complete the course at the college, but couldn't able to do it because moving to UK and doing my dream job is the best thing happened to me. I recently received my visa.

Since, I am not able to persue this course as this requires my physical presence to attend classes and attempt exams but wanted to explore if your college offers any course which can be completed online and not require physical presence.

Thanks for your understanding, Looking forward to your response.

Yours,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully covered all parts of the letter prompt. You clearly stated which part-time course you booked ("operations management"), explained the reason for your cancellation (moving to the UK for a dream job opportunity and visa approval), and inquired about alternative online courses that do not require physical attendance. Your ideas are relevant and appropriately extended. However, your explanation includes some unnecessary elaboration on what the course entails, which detracts slightly from the letter's purpose, but overall the communicative goals of the task are fully achieved. This performance aligns well with Band 7.0 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter maintains a clear overall progression and logical organization. You use standard letter-writing conventions, beginning with an appropriate salutation and ending with a formal sign-off, though "Yours, Simran" is slightly informal compared to "Yours sincerely,". Paragraphing is used to separate your introduction, course details, cancellation reasons, and final inquiry. Cohesive devices are generally handled well, such as "Unfortunately," and "Since,", although transitions between some of the sentences within the first paragraph feel slightly abrupt. Overall, the logical flow is easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 or solid 7.0 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully incorporating topic-specific terms such as "operations management", "performance evaluation", and "physical presence". However, there are several word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as writing "exlore" instead of explore, "organzation" instead of organization, "ex student" instead of former student, and "persue" instead of pursue. While these lexical errors do not impede communication, they prevent you from reaching a higher band. Your vocabulary is functional, but requires tighter self-correction and more precise collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and causal clauses using "Since,". However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text. For instance, writing "I was trying since long for this" is ungrammatical, and "couldn't able to do it" contains a verb form error. Punctuation and capitalization are occasionally loose, as seen in "moving to UK" missing the article. The errors do not impede overall communication, but their frequency places your grammatical control securely at Band 6.0.
