IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing to request that you cancel my part-time course in personal support work.

I booked my course on 12 August as a personal support worker for my part-time course. I received an offer letter for my full-time course in supply chain management at MacEwan University in Edmonton. I've been waiting for my offer letter for a long time, but due to the on-demand nature of this course, it's taking a long time. My family and I are so excited about this. If you cancel my part-time course, it will be helpful to me. It is my childhood dream to take this course.

Another possible solution is that if u can offer a supply chain management course on the same campus, I would appreciate it. I already applied for the same course in your college 1 year ago .

I would be grateful if you could consider my request to cancel the course and let me know if you need anything from my side.

Best regards,

chirag

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully covered all the required bullet points in the task instructions. You clearly stated which part-time course you booked ("personal support work"), explained why you need to cancel ("received an offer letter for my full-time course in supply chain management at MacEwan University"), and asked about booking a different course ("if u can offer a supply chain management course on the same campus"). The tone is generally appropriate for a letter to a college administrator, although the salutation "Dear Sir" is a bit informal given the prompt's instruction to begin with "Dear Sir or Madam". Your ideas are relevant and easily understood. Overall, you have met the requirements of the task well, providing clear details for your cancellation and alternative inquiry.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical sequence from stating the purpose of the letter to explaining the situation and offering a possible alternative. Paragraphing is used to separate your main ideas, though some paragraphs could be organized with better flow. Cohesive devices are used, such as "Another possible solution is that" and "I would be grateful if", which help guide the reader. However, referencing is occasionally a bit unclear, and the transition between sentences in the second paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Overall, the message progresses clearly enough for the reader to follow your intentions without confusion, satisfying the criteria for a band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You have used an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating your personal situation to the college administrator. You included some subject-specific phrases such as "personal support worker", "full-time course", and "supply chain management". However, there are some informal word choices and conversational expressions, such as using "u" instead of "you", and some slight awkwardness in phrasing like "from my side". There are also minor repetitive patterns in how you describe the time taken ("taking a long time... long time"). Despite these limitations, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, fitting the band 6.0 description.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as "I am writing to request that you cancel my part-time course..." and "If you cancel my part-time course, it will be helpful to me." There are several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including missing capitalization for names and pronouns (e.g., "chirag"), informal text-speak ("u"), and occasional minor awkwardness in clause structures. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the meaning of your sentences remains clear. You show good control over basic structures and attempt some complex sentences with moderate success, which places your grammar firmly at the band 6.0 level.
