Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Krupa Maisuria. I am writing this letter to request you to cancel my booking for a the part-time course that I recently enroll for at your college.

I registered in the evening English communication course, which is scheduled to begin next month. It is three months duration course conducted by language department. The white principle of our college supervise this course.

Unfortunately, due to some unexpected work project, i will no longer be able to attend the classes regularly. As my working hours now conflict with course timetable, I believe cancelling my booking would be the most suitable option. I just can't ignore my professional work.

I would be grateful if you could cancel my registration and refund the the course fee that I have already paid. I Understand that there may be a cancellation policy. So please let me know if any amount will be deducted or if I need to complete any formalities. Apart from that, I would also like to ask whether it is possible to transfer my booking to a different part-time course with a more suitable timetable. Please send me the details of that particular course, date, duration and availabilities.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and would appreciate your confirmation once the cancellation has been processed. Please let me know about a new course.

Yours faithfully,

Krupa Maisuria

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the prompt. First, the writer identifies which part-time course was booked by mentioning the evening English communication course. Second, the reason for cancellation is clearly explained due to an unexpected work project conflicting with the timetable. Finally, the letter successfully asks about booking a different course, requesting details on dates, duration, and availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator, and all bullet points from the prompt are fully covered with relevant details. Although there are some minor factual inconsistencies in the phrasing, the communicative purpose is completely achieved, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter follows a clear, logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into sensible paragraphs, each dealing with a distinct aspect of the letter, such as the introduction of the booking, the explanation for cancellation, and the inquiry about a refund and an alternative course. Cohesive devices like 'Unfortunately', 'As my working hours', and 'Apart from that' are used appropriately to link ideas, although referencing occasionally falters slightly (e.g., 'details of that particular course'). Overall, the logical flow is easy to follow, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, satisfying the descriptors for a Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using functional phrases such as 'request you to cancel my booking', 'formalities', and 'cancellation policy'. However, there are several word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'enroll' instead of 'enrolled', 'It is three months duration course' with missing articles, and the unusual phrase 'white principle' which appears to be a severe slip or mis-transliteration for 'vice principal'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they prevent the lexical score from reaching higher bands. The vocabulary is sufficient for flexibility and precision in places, but constrained by these recurrent slips, placing it firmly at a Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with structures like conditional thoughts and participial phrases (e.g., 'I would be grateful if you could cancel my registration...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the letter, including missing articles ('for a the part-time course'), incorrect verb forms ('recently enroll for'), and punctuation or capitalization issues (e.g., lowercase 'i'). Although these errors do not severely impede communication, they occur regularly and limit the proportion of error-free sentences. This performance aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors for grammatical range and accuracy.
