Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt. First, they stated the context of booking a part-time computer coding course. Second, they explained the need to cancel due to severe personal medical issues. Third, they enquired about the possibility of transitioning to a different online course. The letter opens appropriately with 'Dear Sir or Madam' and closes with a formal sign-off. Although some ideas like the background in university are slightly peripheral, the core communicative functions are fully met. The position and purpose of the letter are clear throughout, demonstrating a satisfactory approach to the general training writing task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing the reason for cancellation and the alternative course enquiry, and a closing. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For instance, the transition 'Moreover. I want to learn...' contains a fragmented sentence with a period instead of a comma. Additionally, cohesive devices like 'That is why' and 'Thus' are somewhat repetitive and basic. Paragraphing is present and generally appropriate, but the overall progression of ideas feels slightly disjointed due to abrupt shifts between sentences, such as moving from the cancer diagnosis back to course options.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but contains noticeable inaccuracies. The writer uses phrases like 'revoke about the reservation' and 'diagnosed by the dangerous disease', which are unnatural collocations and contain prepositions errors. Some less common vocabulary is attempted, such as 'distract myself to this trauma', but the word choice is imprecise. Spelling is generally accurate, but word formation and lexical chunks require better control to achieve a higher band score. The range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey the basic message, though it remains somewhat limited.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'That is why I choose this part-time course' and 'Moreover, I have to do some treatment and it is time consuming.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with tense consistency ('I choose' instead of 'chose'), passive voice prepositions ('diagnosed by' instead of 'diagnosed with'), and article usage. Punctuation errors also occur, notably sentence fragments such as 'Moreover.' followed by a new sentence. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing.
