Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I want to revoke my application for a Personal Support Worker program starting from January 2027. I am not in favor of holding a seat unneccessary as I am planning to sart a different course from May 2027

Yesterday, I received an offer letter for enrollment in this course. In May, I have applied for this part-time course with high hopes. In meantime, my family caught up in financial crisis due to which I have to transfer all my savings for studies to my parents back home. Accordingly, I entirely want to focus on work in oder to build my savings for further education.

On same note, I want to make an request to consider my application for Registered Practical Nursing from May 2027. I have already applied for this nursing program through the Panjab University website. I am familiar with an online processing of application but to be on safer side I want to draw your attention towards my new application. It would be really appreciated, if you could let me know the fee structure of this program for an entire two years.

I heartly apologise for the inconvenience.

Thank for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Jasleen Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required by the task prompt. First, the writer clearly identifies the part-time course being cancelled: the 'Personal Support Worker program starting from January 2027'. Second, a personal and logical explanation for the cancellation is provided, citing a family financial crisis that required the reallocation of study savings. Third, the letter successfully asks about booking a different course, specifically inquiring about the 'Registered Practical Nursing' program for May 2027 and asking for the fee structure. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator, and all ideas are adequately supported and extended. Therefore, the response fulfills all the requirements of Task Achievement at a high level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. It opens appropriately with the formal salutation and immediately states the purpose of the letter in the first paragraph. The body paragraphs effectively transition from explaining the cancellation to inquiring about the alternative nursing program. Cohesive devices are generally used well, such as 'Accordingly' and 'On same note', although 'On same note' is slightly unnatural phrasing compared to 'Along the same lines' or 'Similarly'. Paragraphing is utilized sufficiently to separate distinct ideas, ensuring the reader can follow the writer's intentions without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for this task, with terms like 'financial crisis', 'fee structure', and 'enrollment'. However, there are several noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors, such as 'revoke my application' (withdraw is more natural), 'holding a seat unneccessary' (unnecessarily), and 'in meantime' (in the meantime). Spelling errors also occur, such as 'unneccessary', 'sart' instead of 'start', 'oder' instead of 'order', and 'heartly'. These lexical inaccuracies and minor spelling lapses prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly in the competent range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional and subordinate clauses ('Yesterday, I received an offer letter...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including article omissions ('due to which I have to transfer all my savings for studies', 'make an request', 'familiar with an online processing') and preposition issues ('in May, I have applied' instead of 'for May'). While these errors are noticeable and require occasional rereading, they do not severely impede communication. The control over grammar is adequate for a solid pass, reflecting a dependable intermediate skill level.
