Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to cancel my booking for a part-time course in personal support worker that I recently booked in St. Clair college for December intake. The timeline of this course is six months along with 2 months of internship.

However, now I changed my mind and I wanted to withdrawl my name. This is because, I am working as a full-time behavior support worker and my company does not allow me to take off for 2 months for internship. Therefore, this will not be a suitable option for me.

Thus, I decided to persue my studies in behavior assistant therapist which is a 4 month course and it will also provides an international certification. The best part is that it is related to my work field and I think it will help me to broden my skills in this feild to help clients with special needs in a better way. So, could you please help me with the booking criteria for the upcoming session of this course. And please let me know if you need any further documentation from my side.

Thank you for considering my request. I look forward to your kind response.

Yours faithfully,

Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You successfully covered all three bullet points required in the task instructions. You clearly stated which part-time course you originally booked by mentioning the 'personal support worker' program for the December intake at St. Clair College. You then explained your reasons for cancellation by detailing your current employment as a full-time behavior support worker and your company's refusal to grant two months of leave for the internship. Finally, you successfully asked about booking a different course, specifically inquiring about the 'behavior assistant therapist' program, its booking criteria, and whether further documentation is required. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a correspondence with a college administrator. All parts are well-developed and easy to follow, meeting the expectations for a Band 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You start with the purpose of the letter, move into the reasons for cancellation in the second paragraph, transition smoothly into the alternative course inquiry in the third paragraph, and conclude politely. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different ideas. You make good use of cohesive devices such as 'However', 'This is because', 'Therefore', and 'Thus' to connect your thoughts. While referencing and linking are generally effective, occasional awkward transitions slightly prevent you from reaching a higher band. Overall, the message flows coherently and meets the standard for a solid Band 7.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message with clarity and some precision. You use subject-specific terms related to your profession and studies, such as 'personal support worker', 'internship', 'behavior support worker', and 'international certification'. However, there are some noticeable spelling errors, such as 'withdrawl' instead of 'withdrawal', 'persue' instead of 'pursue', 'broden' instead of 'broaden', and 'feild' instead of 'field'. These lexical inaccuracies prevent a higher score, placing your performance comfortably at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You show a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate conjunctions effectively, such as in 'which is a 4 month course and it will also provides an international certification.' There are, however, some grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text. For instance, you wrote 'that I recently booked in St. Clair college' (at St. Clair College) and 'it will also provides' (it will also provide). Additionally, tense consistency occasionally slips, such as 'now I changed my mind and I wanted to withdrawl' instead of 'now I have changed my mind and I want to withdraw'. These errors occasionally distract the reader, aligning your grammar score with Band 6.0.
