Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing regarding the cancellation of the course I recently booked at your college and i have completed my studies as a Social Service Worker and am currently pursuing a career in this field. I was particularly interested in this course because I would like to develop my knowledge and understanding of the mental and physical conditions of autistic individuals. The part-time format was also convenient for me, as the college is located close to both my workplace and home.

However, I have decided to cancel the course because most of the classes are scheduled in the evening, which is difficult for me to attend. I contacted the college management to ask whether I could join a different time slot or batch for the same course, but unfortunately, no alternative was available due to limited availability.

Therefore, I would like to ask if you could provide me with information about any other courses in the same or a related field that are available at a more suitable time. I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know about the available options, course schedules, and any upcoming intakes.

Thank you for your time and assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely,

Daman

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all bullet points in the task instructions. The letter begins appropriately with the requested salutation and clearly identifies the specific part-time course that was booked, while expanding naturally on the context. The second paragraph clearly explains the reason for cancellation due to evening scheduling conflicts and previous unsuccessful attempts to change batches. Finally, the third paragraph successfully asks about booking a different course and requests information regarding schedules and upcoming intakes. The tone is consistently polite and formal, fitting the requirements of a general training letter, and the purpose of the communication is maintained from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the initial booking details and background, to the reason for cancellation, and finally to inquiries regarding alternative courses. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph serving a distinct functional purpose. Cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Therefore', and appropriate referencing pronouns ('which', 'this') are used effectively to link ideas without being mechanical or intrusive. The overall structure flows naturally and guides the reader effortlessly through the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary for the task. Phrases like 'pursuing a career', 'develop my knowledge and understanding', 'scheduled in the evening', and 'upcoming intakes' show a natural control of language. There is an attempt to use less common items and functional collocations related to education and professional development. While vocabulary is largely appropriate, there are occasional minor slips in lexical choice, such as the lowercase 'i' in the opening sentence, but overall, the language is natural and fully adequate to convey precise meanings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses ('which is difficult for me to attend', 'that are available at a more suitable time') and conditional-style constructions. Control of grammar and punctuation is generally strong, with the majority of sentences being grammatically sound. Punctuation is accurate, and sentences are well-constructed. A minor slip occurs in the first sentence with the uncapitalised pronoun 'i', but this does not detract significantly from the overall control. The grammatical range allows for clear, fluid expression of complex ideas.
