Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request cancelation for the Business Studies course. I recently enrolled in this course for summer. While booking this part-time course, I never read the course description. After the regestration I realised that last summer I already studied the same course with different name, though all subjects are same. So, I believe I should rather drop this course than going ahed. I humbely request you to drop me out of this course and please let me know if there is any cancellation fees.

Morever, I am looking forward to get enrolled in new course. I am particularly interested in the subject related to computer. If you can suggest me any course or send me the list of all availiable course that would be a great help. Additionally, could you please share fees structure as well? So that I know whether I have to pay extra for the course or not.

I am so sorry for the inconvenience and really appreciate your help.

Kind regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully covers all the bullet points required by the task. You clearly state which part-time course you booked, mentioning the Business Studies course for summer. You explain the reason for your cancellation by noting that you realized you had already studied the same course previously under a different name. Furthermore, you ask about booking a different course, specifically expressing interest in computer-related subjects and inquiring about course lists and fee structures. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a college administrator, and your ideas are well-extended and supported throughout the response, giving a clear purpose from start to finish.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs that separate the cancellation request from the inquiry about new courses, followed by a polite closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'While booking', 'After the regestration', 'Morever', and 'Additionally' to connect your ideas, although there is some minor mechanical use. To reach the next level, ensure that cohesive devices are used even more flexibly and that referencing remains consistently smooth without minor spelling or transitional awkwardness.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'request cancelation' and 'fees structure'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors, such as 'regestration' instead of registration, 'regret' style issues like 'going ahed' instead of going ahead, and 'humbely' instead of humbly. Word choice is occasionally imprecise, for instance using 'different name, though all subjects are same'. These lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips prevent the vocabulary score from rising higher, keeping the response firmly within the adequate range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'If you can suggest me any course or send me the list of all availiable course that would be a great help.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('request cancelation', 'fee structure'), preposition usage ('drop me out of this course'), and punctuation slips with fragment sentences ('So that I know whether I have to pay extra for the course or not.'). However, these errors rarely impede communication and your meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
