Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to request cancellation of the Business Studies course. I recently enrolled in this course in summer. While booking this part-time course, I never read the course description. After the registration I realised that last summer I already studied the same course with a different name, though all subjects are same. So, I believe I should rather drop this course than go ahead. I humbly request you to remove me out of this course and please let me know if there is any cancellation fee.

Moreover, I am looking forward to getting enrolled in a new course. I am particularly interested in subjects related to computers. If you can suggest to me any courses or send me the list of all available course, that would be a great help. Additionally, could you please share fee structure as well? So that, I know whether I have to pay extra for the course or not.

I am so sorry for the inconvenience and really appreciate your help.

Kind regards,

XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

Your response covers all parts of the task very well and develops your ideas thoroughly. You clearly state which course you booked by writing, 'I am writing this letter to request cancellation of the Business Studies course.' You provide a clear explanation for why you need to cancel, noting that you realised you had already studied the same subject last summer. Furthermore, you successfully cover the third bullet point by asking about a different course and inquiring about the fee structure and cancellation charges. All three bullet points are fully addressed with relevant details and a natural tone. To achieve the absolute highest level, your ideas could be extended even further with finer context, but your response currently covers the requirements with strong development and clear purpose.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your letter shows clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of paragraphing, separating your opening statement and the main cancellation reason from your inquiries about alternative courses and the closing apology. You use cohesive devices adequately to guide the reader, such as 'Moreover' to introduce your interest in a new course and 'Additionally' to bring up the fee structure. While some of your transitions are a bit straightforward rather than subtly integrated, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow. To move to a higher band, you would need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and avoid slight mechanical tendencies in how your sentences and paragraphs link together.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common phrases such as 'request cancellation' and 'fee structure.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing that prevent a higher mark. For instance, writing 'remove me out of this course' is unnatural, and it would be more idiomatic to write 'withdraw me from this course.' Similarly, phrases like 'getting enrolled in a new course' show basic control, though they are completely clear to the reader. To reach the next level, you need to use a wider range of sophisticated vocabulary and precise collocations with greater flexibility and fewer minor slips in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating decent control over punctuation and sentence structure. You successfully use conditional clauses, such as 'If you can suggest to me any courses... that would be a great help.' However, there are some minor errors in grammar and prepositions, such as writing 'send me the list of all available course' (missing the plural 'courses') and awkward preposition use in 'getting enrolled in a new course' instead of simply 'enrolling in.' These errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure your meaning. To achieve a higher score, you would need to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and eliminate minor slip-ups in plurals and articles.
