Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you that last week i had enrolled in a personal support worker part-time course. The main purpose of pursuing this study was to secure a job in the healthcare sector. Luckily, I was hired by the Civic hospital yesterday. Consequently, I am no longer intrested in this course.
Although I am aware that the fees is not refundable, I am willing to book another course for french language. Despite I know that it is an unprofessional to cancel or change booking one week prior, the purpose of the course is completed now.
It would be appreciated if you provide me some details about the start date of French classes, fee differences and other required documents. If college does not have vacant seat, I can continue from upcoming session. I hope you will undersrand my concern and take some appropriate steps.
Yours faithfully,
Nikhil.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You successfully covered all parts of the prompt in this letter. You clearly stated the course you booked (personal support worker), explained your reason for cancellation by noting that you secured a job at Civic hospital, and asked about booking an alternative course in French along with related details. Your tone is appropriate for a formal request. To move further up, you could expand slightly more on your questions regarding the French course, ensuring all aspects are fully extended with deeper detail, such as mentioning specific scheduling preferences or inquiry into intensive formats.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your letter shows a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose: introducing the situation and reason for cancellation in the first paragraph, discussing the transfer to a French course in the second, and inquiring about logistical details in the third. You use cohesive devices adequately, such as 'Consequently' and 'Although'. To achieve an even higher band, you could aim for smoother transitions between ideas and ensure that referencing remains completely unambiguous throughout, avoiding minor mechanical feel in linking phrases.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for this general task, using terms like 'pursuing this study', 'healthcare sector', and 'unprofessional'. However, there are some vocabulary choices, word form, and spelling errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'intrested' instead of 'interested', 'fees is' instead of 'fees are', and the awkward phrasing 'for french language'. There are also minor collocation slips, such as 'an unprofessional' instead of 'unprofessional'. Refining your spelling and accuracy in word forms will help elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating clauses with 'Although', 'Despite', and conditional structures like 'If college does not have...'. You demonstrate good control overall, but there are some grammatical errors, such as the lowercase 'i' in the first sentence, an incorrect article in 'an unprofessional', and a missing article in 'If college does not have'. Furthermore, the clause 'Despite I know' is grammatically imprecise and should be 'Despite knowing' or 'Although I know'. Fixing these errors will help you display better grammatical control.
