Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to cancel my booking for recent part-time course at a college. I want to replace my course with another one in different field.

I have enrolled for Human Resources Management course which is part-time. Initially, I did not have idea about this field but one of my friends suggested me to register for this particular field. I do not have much interest in this as well.

Now I am thinking to cancel my booking because i have more interest in health-care sector. It was unclear to me that i can take health related studies without previous same background. I thought It is compulsary the medical studies in secondary.

As i did research on it and get to know I am eligible to enroll for Pharmacy assistant course . So can you please book me for this course because it comes under healthcare sector as well. It will be beneficial for me in future. Pharmacy assistants have good salaries and I can build my career in this stream.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

Manjit Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You successfully covered all parts of the task by clearly stating which course you booked (Human Resources Management), explaining why you need to cancel due to a change of interest toward healthcare, and asking to transfer to a Pharmacy assistant course. Your position and ideas are clear and extended well, demonstrating a good grasp of the communicative purpose. Although some of the explanation regarding your eligibility could have been slightly more concise, your overall development easily satisfies the criteria for addressing all bullet points thoroughly and effectively, ensuring the reader fully understands your situation and request.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter shows a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression of ideas from cancellation to alternative course options. You used paragraphing appropriately to separate different stages of your letter, such as introduction, reasoning, and the final request. However, some cohesive devices and referencing feel a bit mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on simple transitional links. To move towards a higher band, you would need to integrate more sophisticated and flexible cohesive devices, ensuring smoother transitions between sentences and clearer referencing throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to education and employment, such as 'Human Resources Management', 'healthcare sector', and 'eligible'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, missing articles, and awkward phrasing, such as writing 'recent part-time course' instead of 'a recent part-time course' and 'compulsary the medical studies' instead of 'compulsory to study medicine'. These minor lexical errors do not impede communication, but you would need more precision in collocations and word forms to reach the next band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You used a mix of simple and complex sentence forms to convey your message, including conditional and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar, such as missing articles ('in different field', 'in secondary'), tense inconsistencies ('did not have idea'), and preposition usage within grammatical patterns. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the meaning of your sentences remains clear. To achieve a higher score, you would need to demonstrate a wider variety of error-free complex structures and tighter control over punctuation and articles.
