Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with my part time course , which I have booked recently in your college. Actually I took a short term course of web designing . Unfortunately I read the content of this course and I found least interested.

I noticed that all the content inside this course was totally irrelevant to my current expectations since I want to learn more about the advance programming of developing a website. So that I could use my knowledge in my current job, but in part time course is designed for beginners not for experts in this field. It would be great if you cancel my booking in this course and offer me an another course.

I would like to be the part of advance web design course , in which I would definitely learn an advanced technical concepts of designing a website . I hope you would comply my request and response me back at earliest. I would really appreciate your understanding for my decision.

Yours faithfully,

Anmol

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You successfully cover all bullet points required by the prompt. You state which course you booked by mentioning the short-term course of web designing, explain why you need to cancel it because it is designed for beginners rather than experts, and ask about booking a different advanced course. However, some parts of your response are slightly under-developed or mixed in tone; for example, you begin by expressing dissatisfaction in a way that feels more like a complaint about the course content rather than simply notifying them of a cancellation. To reach a higher band, your ideas could be extended more smoothly with clearer justifications for your career goals, ensuring all bullet points are addressed with equal depth and precision throughout the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your letter has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear beginning, middle, and end, using standard conventions such as 'Dear Sir' and 'Yours faithfully'. You divide your thoughts into logical paragraphs covering the course details, the reasons for cancellation, and the request for an alternative course. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or faulty. For instance, transitional phrases like 'So that I could use my knowledge' are used awkwardly at the start of a sentence, and referencing can feel slightly disjointed. To move up, you need to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure smoother logical progression between sentences without relying on abrupt phrasing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common lexical items such as 'dissatisfaction', 'irrelevant', and 'expectations'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For example, writing 'part time course' instead of 'part-time course', 'in least interested' instead of 'least interested in it', and 'advance programming' instead of 'advanced programming'. Additionally, you misspell 'advance' instead of 'advanced' in your final paragraph, and phrase requests with slight awkwardness like 'response me back at earliest'. These errors show an adequate working vocabulary for everyday transactional purposes, but lack the precision needed for a higher level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as using subordinate clauses introduced by 'since' and 'in which'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, but they rarely impede communication. For instance, there is an unnecessary comma before the prepositional phrase in 'part time course , which I have booked recently', an incorrect article in 'offer me an another course', and missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms such as 'I hope you would comply my request' instead of 'comply with'. To achieve a higher band, you would need to produce a greater frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate better control over articles, prepositions, and punctuation.
