Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request you to cancel my enrollment in a part-time course.

I recently booked a part-time Cooking program at your Kitchener Downtown campus.

I want to cancel my enrollment because I thought this course includes baking as well. But when I get some overview about my curriculumn, I realise, this program will only help me to enhance my cooking skills. Therefore, I decided to cancel my booking.

As at the same day, I checked your website, and search about another options then I saw one facinating course for me, which named 'The Food and Bakers'. This program quickly keep my attention because it does not only includes cooking but also have baking lessons. I want to book my self for this, and I kindly request you to provide me some more information about this course

Waiting for your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Amanpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all bullet points required by the prompt: you clearly state which part-time course you booked, explain why you need to cancel your booking due to the lack of baking modules, and ask about booking a different course ('The Food and Bakers'). The ideas are relevant and generally easy to follow. However, please note that the response is slightly below the 150-word minimum, containing 149 words, which impacts the overall completeness of the task. To reach a higher band, the ideas—particularly the explanation of why you are switching courses—could be expanded with slightly more detail, and the length requirement must be fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear letter format, beginning with an appropriate salutation and ending with a sign-off. Information is generally presented in a logical sequence, moving from the initial booking and cancellation reason to the alternative course inquiry. Paragraphing is used, though paragraph breaks could be better managed to separate distinct ideas more clearly. Cohesive devices are used, but referencing can sometimes feel slightly mechanical, such as the repetitive use of transitions. To achieve a higher level, you should ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and more sophisticated referencing throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating your meaning to the reader. You make some attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'enrollment', 'curriculum', and 'facinating', though there are some noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies like 'facinating' (fascinating) and 'curriculumn'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a typical profile of this band level. To move to a higher band, you should expand your range of less common lexical items and pay closer attention to spelling and precise word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I want to cancel my enrollment because I thought this course includes baking as well.' There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including tense consistency ('when I get some overview... I realise') and punctuation issues. However, these errors are relatively minor and rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to increase the frequency of error-free complex sentences and maintain strict control over verb tenses and agreement.
