Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

My name is Ravi and last week, I enrolled in a online design class as a part-time student. I am writing this letter to cancel my registation.

I decided to join design course to enhance my AUTO CAD knowlegde. So, I can easily get a designer job in multinational construction firms. However, yesterday, I got the job offer letter as a full- time project coordinator also they are going to pay a substantial remuneration. As a result, I am not able to join this course because I will a hectic schedule. Moreover, this role does not require any designing skills. So, there is no point of view to attend a design classes.

If you cancel my registation, I would like to join in a management course because it not only helps me with my current job duties, but also I can manage project easily through using my management skills.

I hope you understand my situation and will wait for your response.

Yours faithfully,

Ravi.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three required points: you identify the online design course, explain that a new full-time job prevents you from attending, and ask to enrol in a management course instead. The reason is relevant and supported by details about your new role and its duties, so the reader can understand your decision. The request to change courses is also clear, although it would be more complete if you asked whether the college offers a suitable management course and how to transfer your booking. The explanation that the new role does not require design skills is understandable, but the link between this and cancelling could be expressed more directly. Overall, the purpose and position remain clear throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

Your ideas follow a clear sequence: you introduce yourself and the booking, explain the change in circumstances, then request a different course and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “However,” “As a result,” and “Moreover” show how the points relate. At times, though, the connectors make the reasoning feel slightly mechanical, and several short statements could be joined or developed more smoothly. For example, “So, there is no point of view to attend a design classes” repeats the cancellation rationale rather than advancing it. The final request would also connect more naturally if you explicitly asked the administrator about availability and the transfer process.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for this formal letter, including relevant terms such as “part-time,” “job offer,” “remuneration,” “project coordinator,” and “management skills.” These choices communicate the situation clearly, and “substantial remuneration” shows an attempt to use more formal vocabulary. Some spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, however: “registation” and “knowlegde” are misspelled, while “no point of view” is not the natural expression in this context. Phrases such as “join design course” and “join in a management course” also show some difficulty with natural collocation. Aim to learn common word partnerships and check spelling, especially in a formal letter, while retaining the useful range you already attempt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The letter includes both simple sentences and attempts at more complex structures, such as “because I will a hectic schedule” and “it not only helps me … but also I can manage project easily.” The meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in articles, verb forms, and sentence construction remain. For example, “a online design class” needs the correct article, “I will a hectic schedule” is missing a verb, and “I decided to join design course” needs an article. The sentence beginning “However, yesterday” also joins two ideas without a clear grammatical link. Practise building accurate clauses with “because” and “not only … but also,” and check articles and verb forms before submitting.
