Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear sir or Madam,

I have recently booked a part-time course at a college called Project Management because, I do have some work experience in my home country as a Project Manager. I felt, they were not paying me enough according to my responsibilities, that's why I decided to take this course and study in foreign country.

Unfortunately, I need to cancel my registration for this course becuase, later on I have realised that there are lots of people in this country who are doing this same course, and the competition is increasing day by day. Therefore, it is hard to get a field job after completing this course. My course is expected to start in next April, so you do have some time to do the formalities to cancel my registration.

However, I am interested in doing different course called Finance Management becuase one of my friend who lives in Canada from last 5 years suggested me to do this course as there are lot of job opportunities in banking sector as a Financial Advisor. Please let me know, if this course is available in next April or not.

Thank you for your time and understaning. Looking forward for your reply.

Kind regards,

Abhi Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements clearly: you identify the Project Management course, explain that you are concerned about competition and job prospects, and ask whether Finance Management is available in April. Your reason for cancelling is relevant and supported by your experience and your friend’s advice, so the reader can understand your decision. The request to cancel is implied by “I need to cancel my registration,” though a more direct, polite instruction would make the purpose unmistakable. The alternative-course enquiry is also clear, but could be developed by asking about the application process or whether your existing booking can be transferred. Overall, the task is handled fully, with some details that could be more precisely developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information follows a sensible sequence: you explain the original booking, give your reason for cancelling, and then ask about another course. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Therefore,” and “However” guide the reader through your reasoning. Some connections are less smooth, however. The opening sentence combines your work experience, dissatisfaction with pay, and decision to study abroad, making the main point harder to follow. “However” does not create a strong contrast between cancelling one course and enquiring about another. Use shorter sentences and clearer links, and make the cancellation request a distinct point. This would make the progression more natural and reduce the slightly mechanical feel of the transitions.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the letter, including relevant terms such as “registration,” “competition,” “job opportunities,” and “Financial Advisor.” These choices make the purpose and subject matter clear, and you attempt some more specific language related to employment and study. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural expressions, including “field job,” “doing this same course,” and “formalities to cancel my registration.” Spelling errors such as “becuase” and “understaning” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to “employment in the field” and “the cancellation process.” This would make your vocabulary more precise and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a result introduced by “Therefore.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, articles, prepositions, and punctuation. For example, “because, I do have” has an unnecessary comma, while “study in foreign country” needs an article. The phrase “one of my friend” also requires a plural noun, and “who lives in Canada from last 5 years” uses an incorrect tense and time expression. Several sentences are long and joined with commas, which weakens control. Practise accurate clause boundaries and common article and tense patterns, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
