IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request information regarding the cancellation of a part-time course that I booked at a college.
I booked the 6-month early childhood program on 9th October at the Toronto campus, and also paid the full fees; the ID number is AB[redacted phone]. Because my friends enrolled in the Pharmacy Assistant course, I changed my mind. Furthermore, nowadays the Pharmacy Assistant program is in high demand, and I want to contribute to the healthcare sector. Therefore, I need to cancel my booking. I would appreciate it if you could cancel my registration. I apologize for the inconvenience caused.
After this termination, I would like to register for the pharmacy assistance module. So, for the new enrollment, do I have to start the process from the beginning? In addition, I would be grateful if you could provide the details of the structure and fees. I assure you that this time I will not cancel the process.
Thank you for your time and consideration. Please let me know if you need any further documentation.
Yours faithfully,
Almas

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three required points clearly. You identify the booked course, campus, date and booking reference, explain that you want to move into healthcare, and ask whether you must restart the enrolment process and request information about the alternative course’s structure and fees. These details make the request specific and give the administrator useful context. The reason for cancelling is understandable, although the reference to following your friends’ choice is less persuasive than your stated career interest; you could explain more directly why the early childhood course no longer suits your plans. Overall, the purpose and requests are well developed, with only a small opportunity to make the cancellation rationale more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the cancellation request, gives booking details and a reason, then moves to the alternative course and closes politely. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Therefore,” and “In addition” help connect the points. The organisation is easy to follow throughout. However, several transitions are somewhat formulaic, and “After this termination” sounds abrupt when moving from cancellation to the new enrolment. A more direct link, such as “Once the cancellation is processed, I would like to enrol…”, would make the relationship between the requests smoother. The final assurance that you will not cancel again is also slightly disconnected from the practical questions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal language for a college letter, including “request information,” “registration,” “inconvenience,” and “documentation.” The vocabulary communicates the purpose clearly, and some less common expressions show an effort to maintain a formal tone. At times, however, word choice or collocation is not fully natural: “After this termination” is an awkward way to refer to cancelling a booking, while “pharmacy assistance module” does not match the earlier name “Pharmacy Assistant course.” “I assure you that this time I will not cancel the process” is also an unusual formulation. More precise, consistent terms for the course and enrolment process would improve fluency and control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The letter uses a good mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Because my friends enrolled in the Pharmacy Assistant course, I changed my mind” and the polite conditional “I would appreciate it if you could cancel my registration.” Most sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, and punctuation generally supports readability. A few constructions could be more accurate or natural. In “I booked the 6-month early childhood program on 9th October …; the ID number is…”, the semicolon joins details somewhat awkwardly; separating the booking reference into its own sentence would be clearer. Also, “After this termination” is grammatically possible but creates an unclear reference. Overall, the range is effective, with a few remaining issues in sentence linking and reference.
