Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have recently booked a part time computer typing course at your center but unfortunately iam not able to start the course because i have to travel for umrah to saudi arabia with my family,so iam not able to attend that course.

as you mentioned in your advertisment that slot for that course is limited so you can adjust any other student at my place and if youre are able to refund my admission fee please refund it in my same bank account .

I also attached the payment slip and booking confirmation with this letter. My travel plan is for about 21 days,So if you have any other slot after the month then refer me to the next course.

if you donot have the same course in coming month then booked me for the worldexcel course which is going to start from end of next month.I will be so great full to you .

Thanks,

Ali Hamza

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three requested points clearly: you identify the computer typing course, explain that travel for Umrah with your family prevents attendance, and ask about a later course or the WorldExcel course. The request to release your place to another student and refund the fee also makes the purpose of the letter clear. Your reason and proposed alternatives are relevant and supported with details, such as the 21-day trip. To make the response more fully developed, clarify whether you are asking to transfer your booking or make a new booking, and specify the course date or preferred arrangement if known. A more formal closing request would also strengthen the letter’s overall effectiveness.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The information follows a sensible order: you introduce the booking and cancellation, explain the reason, then discuss a refund and alternative courses. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these points, and the reader can follow your main purpose. However, some links between ideas feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “so” is used repeatedly, and “if you have any other slot after the month then refer me to the next course” does not clearly connect the travel period to the requested booking arrangement. The long second paragraph also combines releasing your place and requesting a refund. Use clearer transitions and separate the cancellation, refund, and alternative-course requests into distinct stages.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “booking confirmation,” “admission fee,” “refund,” and “slot,” so the main message is understandable. There is some attempt at more specific language, such as “computer typing course” and “travel plan.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “advertisment,” “great full,” and “refer me,” and some expressions are not natural for a formal college letter. “Adjust any other student at my place” is also an awkward collocation. Choose precise, conventional phrases such as “offer my place to another student” and “enrol me on the next course.” More accurate spelling and formal vocabulary would make your message clearer and more appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause (“because I have to travel”) and conditional requests (“if you are able to refund…”). The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors recur. For example, “I am not able to start the course because I have to travel …, so I am not able to attend” repeats the same idea and joins clauses awkwardly. In “if you have any other slot after the month then refer me,” the conditional structure needs clearer phrasing, such as “If a place is available next month, please book me onto the course.” Capitalise “I,” use full stops to avoid run-on sentences, and check articles and sentence boundaries.
