IELTS Writing Task 1 question
You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.
Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:
- say which part-time course you booked
- explain why you need to cancel your booking
- ask about booking a different course
You do NOT need to write any addresses.
Begin your letter as follows:
Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to cancel my booking. I booked a part-time course a few weeks ago, related to trade course, but I would not be able to participate in that. I have been informed my professor that I will have to complete a different project to help other team members.
Intially, I wanted to learn and improve my electrical skills. That is why, I booked part-time practical course. However, as I have to focus on my core subjects to graduate, I will left with insufficient time to complete it.
Please let me know if this or even any other similar practical program is available in the next semester because I will book that in advance. I will also discuss about this with my professor, so neither of us will interact with any issue later after booking it.
Thank you for your consideration into this matter.
I look forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Manish

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You cover all three required points: you identify the booking as a practical course to improve your electrical skills, explain that a project and graduation subjects leave you without enough time, and ask about taking a similar course next semester. The reason for cancelling is relevant and understandable. However, the course is initially described only as “related to trade course,” so the exact course name or subject could be clearer. The request about a different course is also somewhat tentative (“this or even any other similar practical program”), and the proposed discussion with your professor is not fully explained. State the cancellation directly, then make a specific enquiry about available alternatives and how to book one.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall sequence: cancellation and its reason come first, followed by a request about future study and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and linking expressions such as “However” and “That is why” show how the ideas relate. Some connections are less clear or sound mechanical, particularly “I will also discuss about this with my professor, so neither of us will interact with any issue later after booking it.” The reference to “this” is vague, and the sentence’s purpose is difficult to follow. Make the request and any follow-up arrangements explicit, and use simpler links where the relationship between ideas is straightforward.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the situation, including “cancel my booking,” “electrical skills,” “core subjects,” and “next semester,” so the main message is clear. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “practical course” and “insufficient time.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “related to trade course,” “interact with any issue,” and “consideration into this matter.” “Intially” is also misspelled. These slips make parts of the letter less natural, even though they do not prevent understanding. Aim for precise, conventional phrases used in formal correspondence, and check spelling and collocations before sending.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause with “as” and a conditional-style request beginning “Please let me know if…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “I have been informed my professor” needs “informed by my professor,” and “I will left with insufficient time” should be “I will be left with insufficient time.” In “I look forward to hear from you,” the verb after “look forward to” should be in the -ing form. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “booked part-time practical course.” Review verb patterns, passive constructions, and article use to make your sentences more accurate.
