Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing to inform you that I have recently booked a part- time course that I would no longer be able to attend.
Last week I enrolled myself in the baking programm course number 7788. I have sucessfully paid the first semester tution fee which was around 9,000$.
However, unfortunately I had lost my Grandfather and i have to move back to my orignal province which is Quebec. I strongly believe that my family requires my support in this devastating time. Although I am fascinated with baking and I know it involves physical presence but I will choose an alternative online course for my post graduation.
I request you to share more information about different programmes that can cordially get along with my past studies but I can only focus on online courses right now. I would appreciate if you could assist in the funds transfer procedure.
It would be grateful if you could take neccessary steps in resolving this matter. Looking forward to hearing back from you.
Your's faithfully,
Rohan Garg

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You address all three requirements clearly: you identify the baking course and its number, explain that a bereavement means you must return to Quebec, and ask about suitable online alternatives. The reason for cancelling is relevant and supported by the detail that your family needs your support. Your request for information about courses that fit your previous studies also gives the administrator a useful direction. To make the response more fully developed, state explicitly that you are cancelling the existing booking and clarify what you want done with the fee—for example, whether you are requesting a refund or transfer. The purpose is clear throughout, but these details would make the practical request more precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: you introduce the booking, explain the circumstances, then ask about alternatives and the fee. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “However” and “Although” show how the ideas relate. The overall organisation is easy to follow. Some connections could be more precise: the sentence about choosing an online course for postgraduate study moves quickly from the baking course to a different educational goal, so explain how the new course relates to your plans. The final requests about course information and transferring funds could also be separated or ordered more explicitly. This would make the progression feel more deliberate rather than simply adding requests.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for a formal administrative letter, including “enrolled,” “alternative,” “physical presence,” and “funds transfer procedure.” These choices communicate the main points, and the family circumstances are expressed with appropriate seriousness. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “baking programm course,” “cordially get along with my past studies,” and “resolving this matter.” There are also spelling errors, including “sucessfully,” “tution,” and “neccessary,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for natural, precise phrases such as “a baking course,” “suit my previous studies,” and “process my refund or transfer.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would strengthen control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “Although I am fascinated with baking…” and the reason introduced by “which.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the grammatical errors do not prevent the reader from following your purpose. Some errors persist in sentence construction and punctuation: “I have recently booked a part-time course that I would no longer be able to attend” is awkwardly framed, while “I had lost my Grandfather and i have to move” shifts tense and has inconsistent capitalisation. In “I would appreciate if you could assist,” the clause needs “it” after “appreciate.” Review tense consistency, sentence boundaries, and punctuation to make the complex structures more controlled.
