IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to make a cancelation of the booking made on the recent part-time course.

I made a booking for the new course which was advertised during the last general assembly. The course is titled Technical Surveys in Sociology, with the course code, 3098. It is to be headed by the new college adminstrator, from the department of science.

Unfortunately, I noticed that the timing of the class sessions are clashing with quite a number of my current lectures. Although I reached out to the class administrator regarding this issue, it proved futile as I was advised to cancel the course I was yet to commence. Ultimately, I had no choice than to cancel the booked course.

I would like to book for the next part-time course coming up next summer. I came across a number of the available courses on the school's brochure and all the arrangements fits with my time and workload. I would appreciate if I can be informed of the classes with a vacancy, before I proceed to make a reservation.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours sincerely

Nanfah Sati.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requirements: you identify the course as “Technical Surveys in Sociology,” explain that its sessions clash with your current lectures, and ask about reserving a different course next summer. The reason for cancelling is clear and supported by the detail that you contacted the class administrator. Your request for information about courses with vacancies is also relevant. To make the purpose even more direct and fully developed, state explicitly that you are asking the college to cancel your existing booking, rather than relying on “I am writing to make a cancelation” and the later explanation. You could also clarify whether you want to transfer to a suitable course or make a new booking once availability is confirmed. Overall, the task is clearly and appropriately addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: it introduces the cancellation, identifies the course, explains the scheduling problem, and then asks about future options. Paragraphing helps the reader distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Unfortunately,” “Although,” and “Ultimately” make the explanation easy to follow. The closing is appropriate for a formal letter. Some connections could be more precise: “Ultimately, I had no choice than to cancel” repeats the cancellation point without clearly stating whether the booking has already been cancelled or whether you are requesting the administrator to do so. The transition from the current booking to next summer’s courses could also explain more explicitly that you hope to replace the cancelled course. These refinements would make the progression more seamless.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

You use a sufficient range of vocabulary for a formal administrative letter, including “booking,” “clashing,” “vacancy,” “reservation,” and “workload.” The course title and code provide useful specificity, and the tone is generally suitable. There are occasional problems with word choice and collocation: “make a cancelation” is less natural than “cancel my booking,” while “book for the next part-time course” and “the arrangements fits with my time” are awkward formulations. “General assembly” may also be unclear in this context unless it is the college’s established term. Check spelling and word forms, including “cancellation” and “administrator.” More natural collocations and precise wording would make the letter sound more fluent and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

The response includes a useful mix of sentence forms, including the complex sentence beginning “Although I reached out…” and the relative clause in “the course which was advertised.” Many sentences are clear and grammatically controlled, so the message remains easy to understand. A few errors persist in agreement and sentence patterns. For example, “the timing of the class sessions are clashing” has a singular subject (“timing”), and “all the arrangements fits” has a plural subject. The phrase “I had no choice than to cancel” also needs a different construction, such as “I had no choice but to cancel.” In “I would appreciate if I can be informed,” the conditional structure is not well formed. Review subject–verb agreement and conditional request patterns to improve accuracy.
