Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir

I am writing this letter to inform you regarding the cancellation of my finance course which i had recently booked at your college. Unfortunately, i would not be able to start it as my college classes have been extended till 5pm in evening.

I had booked the finance course as a part-time course which was to start from 15th of this month, monday to friday every 3-5 pm. however, now my college classes will get over at 5 pm therefore i will not be able to join this course.I am looking forward to select a statistics course which starts at 6 pm in evening this will suit my routine.

I dont want to waste my time wondering here and there thats why i feel the need of joining the statistic course and it will help me with my main course in the next semester also. I am looking forward to getting a prompt response from your side

your's sincerely

Michelle.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three required points: you identify the finance course, explain that your college classes now finish at 5 p.m., and express interest in a statistics course starting at 6 p.m. The reason for cancelling is clear and relevant, and the proposed alternative is supported by saying it would help with your main course next semester. This gives the letter a clear purpose and meets the task well. However, the request is not framed as a direct question to the administrator, and some details about the new course are not fully clear—for example, whether you want to transfer your booking or make a separate booking. State explicitly what action you would like the college to take and ask about availability or procedure.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a generally coherent sequence: cancellation and its reason come first, followed by the original schedule and then your interest in another course. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and links such as “therefore” and “also” show relationships between ideas. However, the second paragraph combines the old course details, the scheduling problem, and the alternative course in a long run-on sequence, so the progression is not always smooth. The final paragraph repeats the wish to join statistics without clearly making a request, and “wondering here and there” does not connect logically to the booking issue. Use shorter, clearly separated paragraphs and make the transition to a direct question more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main purpose, including “cancellation,” “part-time course,” “routine,” and “next semester.” These choices are relevant to a formal college letter, and the reader can understand your intended meaning. However, some expressions are imprecise or unnatural, such as “inform you regarding,” “classes will get over,” and “waste my time wondering here and there.” “Statistics course” is also more appropriate than “statistic course” when naming the subject. Spelling and capitalization are inconsistent, including “dont,” “i,” and “however.” Aim for conventional formal collocations and check spelling and capitalization so your vocabulary sounds more natural and controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including a reason clause with “as” and a result clause introduced by “therefore.” The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation errors reduce accuracy. For example, “i would not be able” needs a capital “I,” while “classes will get over at 5 pm therefore” needs clearer clause punctuation or restructuring. The sentence beginning “I am looking forward to select” also uses the wrong verb pattern; after “look forward to,” use a noun or an -ing form. There are also missing sentence boundaries, as in “course.I am.” Practise accurate verb patterns and divide linked ideas into complete sentences.
