IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear sir,

I was enrolled in a part time course related to a software applicable in machine design. I have a keen interest in designing equipments.

Recently, I got selected in an inter-college football tournament where expectations are quite high to win the championship. I am completely booked with my practice sessions and unfortunately won't be able to make it to classes due to busy routine at the field. Hence, I want to cancel my booking with the part time course.

I will like to take this as an opportunity and get enrolled in a different course related to artificial intelligence. This course also requires a part time availability and most importantly matches with the strict schedule of practice matches.

As a responsible student, I want to put equal emphasis on sports and academics. I already contacted the subject faculty and explained my situation. Your prompt response is highly appreciated.

Yours sincerely,

Yash Mehta

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

You address all three required points: you identify a part-time course in software for machine design, explain that football tournament practice prevents attendance, and ask to enrol in an artificial-intelligence course instead. The reason for cancelling is clear and supported by relevant context, including the demanding practice schedule. Your intention to balance sport and study also gives the request a clear purpose. To make the letter more fully developed and precise, name the original course more specifically and directly ask whether a place is available on the alternative course, including when it runs or how to transfer your booking. The request is understandable, but “I will like to take this as an opportunity” does not state the practical question as explicitly as it could.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the existing booking, explain the circumstances requiring cancellation, propose another course, and close with a request for a response. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and connectors such as “Recently,” “Hence,” and “most importantly” help show relationships between ideas. The main opportunity is to make the links more natural and the request more prominent. For example, the paragraph about artificial intelligence could begin with a direct transition such as “Could you please tell me whether I can transfer my booking?” The final paragraph introduces contacting faculty, which is not clearly connected to the administrator’s role. Keeping each paragraph focused on one purpose would make the progression even smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonable range of vocabulary for the situation, including “inter-college football tournament,” “championship,” “practice sessions,” and “artificial intelligence.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and some phrasing shows an attempt to be formal. However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, which limits flexibility and collocational control: “software applicable in machine design,” “designing equipments,” “busy routine at the field,” and “part time availability.” Prefer established combinations such as “software used in machine design,” “designing equipment,” and “a demanding training schedule.” “Prompt response is highly appreciated” is also less natural than “I would appreciate your prompt response.” More precise wording would make the letter sound more fluent and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, and several sentences are controlled, such as “I am completely booked with my practice sessions” and “I already contacted the subject faculty and explained my situation.” The reason-and-result sentence beginning “Recently, I got selected…” also shows an attempt to connect ideas in a longer structure. A few grammatical choices remain inaccurate or awkward. In “I will like to take this as an opportunity,” use “would like”; “a part time course” needs a hyphen when used before a noun; and “I got selected” is less suitable in this formal context than “I was selected.” The sentence about the alternative course also needs clearer structure so that its relationship to your practice schedule is unambiguous. Review modal forms and sentence construction while retaining your range.
