Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter regarding to change my part-time course which i booked last month and need information about alternative field as well.

Firstly, i enrolled in Mechanical Course due to my family pressure, and we have our own bussiness in mechanical line, so everyone in the family pushed me towards this course, as i did not have interest in this filed.

Furthermore, the reason to cancel the booking about the particular field is that i have more attracted towards the Civil Course because i have basic knowledge about the skills and tools we required to do the various tasks, and i heard that this course can have more scope to get name and fame in this modern era.

Although it is not a good gesture to book first, and then cancel the confirmed seat, i appolozise for my mistake. Kindly please share the details and requirements of the Civil Course, if you have seat available in that course.

Looking forward to hearing for you soon.

Yours faithfully,

Harmanjit singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three required points: you identify the Mechanical course, explain that family pressure influenced your choice and that your interests lie elsewhere, and ask about the Civil course and seat availability. The reason for changing is clear and relevant, and the apology is appropriate for a formal cancellation letter. The request for information could be more specific—for example, ask about the course schedule, fees, or how to transfer your booking—so the final point is less fully developed than the cancellation explanation. Your purpose remains clear throughout, and the letter is suitably directed to the college administrator. To strengthen the response further, state explicitly that you wish to cancel the Mechanical course booking before asking about enrolling in Civil.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall sequence: you introduce your purpose, explain how you chose Mechanical, give your reason for preferring Civil, and make a request before closing. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these stages, and connectors such as “Firstly” and “Furthermore” guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent progression. However, some linking is mechanical, and the opening combines the cancellation and alternative-course request before either is fully explained. “Although” also introduces an apology in a way that makes the relationship between the ideas slightly awkward. A more direct sequence—cancellation request, reason, then questions about the alternative—would make the cohesion more natural and the letter easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the situation, including “enrolled,” “alternative,” “requirements,” and “seat available,” so the reader can understand the main message. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “basic knowledge” and “scope.” However, several inaccurate or unnatural choices limit precision: “regarding to change,” “more attracted towards,” and “get name and fame” do not fit naturally in this context. Spelling errors such as “bussiness,” “filed,” and “appolozise” are noticeable, while “Mechanical Course” and “Civil Course” would usually be written in lower case unless they are official course titles. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mixture of sentence forms, including longer clauses with “because,” “as,” and “although,” which helps explain your reasons rather than relying only on short statements. The main message is generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and grammatical forms are frequent enough to affect smooth reading. For example, “I am writing this letter regarding to change” has an incorrect pattern after “regarding,” and “i have more attracted” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Although it is not a good gesture…” is also awkwardly structured, and “Looking forward to hearing for you soon” has an incorrect preposition. Practise standard request and apology structures, and check capitalisation, articles, and prepositions when editing.
