Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing regarding cancellation of a part-time course, which I booked in your college recently, and looking to a different course.
Cooking was the course which I booked initially because my family encouraged me to do, so that it can be extremely helpful to run the restaurants owned by them.
Although I enjoy cooking and try different cuisines, I do not consider it as a long term profression for myself. Excessive pressure has been put on me by my family to pursue cooking, but my passion for cars does not allow me to work in this field.
I would like to enquire about Automotive Engineering course in your college. Please share more information related to the vacancy, course duration and fee structure. Such information will be helpful and beneficial for me to make a decision.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Maninder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0
The letter covers all three requirements clearly: you identify the booked Cooking course, explain that family pressure and your interest in cars have changed your plans, and ask about Automotive Engineering. The reason for cancelling is relevant and sufficiently explained, while the request for information about availability, duration and fees makes the enquiry practical. The formal opening and closing also suit a letter to a college administrator. To make the response even more complete, state the cancellation request explicitly—for example, “Please cancel my booking for the Cooking course”—rather than relying on the opening phrase about cancellation. You could also ask directly whether you may book the alternative course, not only request information about it.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The information follows a clear, sensible progression: you introduce the purpose, explain how the original booking came about, give your reason for changing direction, and then enquire about another course. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Although” and “so that” show relationships between ideas. The closing is appropriately placed. Some connections are less smooth, however: the opening combines cancellation and the new-course enquiry before either is developed, and “Such information” repeats the preceding list rather than moving the request forward. A more direct opening followed by a clear cancellation paragraph and a separate alternative-course paragraph would make the progression feel more polished and cohesive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of formal and topic-related vocabulary, including “part-time course,” “long term,” “passion,” “Automotive Engineering,” and “fee structure.” These choices communicate the situation effectively, and the tone is generally appropriate for a college administrator. Some collocations and word forms are less natural, such as “looking to a different course,” “related to the vacancy,” and “profression.” “Helpful and beneficial” is also repetitive because the two words express a similar idea. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for concise, conventional phrases such as “enquire about another course,” “course availability,” and “make an informed decision,” and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the relative clause in “a part-time course, which I booked” and the concessive structure beginning “Although I enjoy cooking.” Most sentences are understandable, and the grammar does not obstruct the message. Some errors remain in sentence construction and grammatical patterns. In the opening, “I am writing regarding cancellation … and looking to a different course” does not maintain a clear parallel structure; “I am writing to cancel … and to enquire about …” would be more controlled. In “encouraged me to do,” the reference is unclear, and “so that it can be extremely helpful” has an unclear subject. Review infinitive patterns, pronoun reference and sentence parallelism to improve accuracy while retaining your complex structures.
