Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am Rajan and last saturday, I booked a part-time course for myself. But I am writing this letter to inform you that I need to cancel it.
I enrolled myself in Physical Education course. As you know, I am 3rd year student of BPT and I do not have time for other courses. My tutor give me advice that replacing this course with another.
I need to cancel it. Because my tutor advice me to participate in the presentation and in the needling workshop also. Unfortunately, I have to go to the delhi. I cannot manage to take part in the classes.
But I decided to enroll myself in different course which is relevant to my studies and will provide benefit in the future. I would like to choose a Biomechanics course. I believe that money will be adjusted and if need more, you can contact me.
I hope you will resolve this issue as soon as possible. I look forward to your response.
Thank you,
Yours faithfully,
Rajandeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three required points: you identify the Physical Education course, explain that study commitments and travel to Delhi prevent attendance, and ask to switch to Biomechanics. The purpose is clear and the details are relevant. The explanation is somewhat uneven, however: the tutor’s advice about a presentation and needling workshop is mentioned, but its connection to the cancellation and the trip is not fully explained. The request to book a different course is also indirect; you say you would like to choose Biomechanics, but do not clearly ask whether a place is available or how to transfer. Making these points more explicit and developing the reason consistently would make the letter more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a recognisable structure, moving from the cancellation, to its reasons, to the proposed replacement course and a closing request. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and phrases such as “Unfortunately” and “I look forward to your response” guide the reader. Some links between ideas are unclear or mechanical. For example, “My tutor give me advice that replacing this course with another” is incomplete, and the next paragraph begins “I need to cancel it” without clearly connecting the tutor’s advice, the workshops and the trip. The repeated cancellation statement also interrupts progression. Use complete linking sentences and make each paragraph develop one connected point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main purpose, including course-related terms such as “Physical Education,” “Biomechanics,” “presentation” and “workshop.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I am writing this letter to inform you.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “enrolled myself in,” “money will be adjusted” and “provide benefit in the future.” These choices make parts of the letter less precise, even though the overall meaning can usually be understood. Aim for conventional administrative phrases and check spelling and capitalisation, such as “Saturday” and “Delhi,” to make the tone more polished and clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, and the main message is generally understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries. For example, “My tutor give me advice” needs a past-tense verb, while “I am 3rd year student” is missing an article. “I need to cancel it. Because my tutor advice me…” incorrectly separates a dependent clause, and “I have to go to the delhi” has an unnecessary article. The sentence about replacing the course is also incomplete. Review past-tense forms and article use, and combine dependent clauses with the sentences they belong to. More accurate control of these patterns would improve readability.
