IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Medam,

I am writing this letter to cancel my english learning part-time course due to some reasons.

I recently joined the your advanced english learning course because i heard from many my close friends and relatives. After a while, I realised that it is not as effective as I thought it should be. Apart from that, it is very costly at the same time. Moreover, in next month, my exams are coming so it would be hard to save time for the course.

I would like you to request a cancellation for the course and please let me know if there is any other course to develop my english learning so I can join after completing my exams.

Thank you soo much for your help.

Yours sincerely,

Lovepreet

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three required points: you identify the advanced English course, give reasons for cancelling, and ask about taking another course after your exams. The reasons—cost, dissatisfaction with its effectiveness, and upcoming exams—are relevant, although the explanation of the course’s shortcomings is brief and the request for alternatives could be more specific. The letter is understandable and appropriately directed to the administrator, but it does not meet the stated 150-word minimum, so the details and purpose are not developed as fully as they could be. To strengthen the response, explain what kind of alternative course you want and ask about its schedule, fees, or enrolment process.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: you state your purpose, explain your reasons, make a request, and close politely. Paragraphing separates the explanation from the request, while connectors such as “Apart from that” and “Moreover” help show how the reasons relate. The sequence is easy to follow, though the reasons are presented somewhat like a list, and the final request combines cancellation and a question about another course in one long sentence. Use a clearer transition into the request and separate these actions into distinct sentences. This would make the letter’s progression more natural while retaining its effective basic organisation.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message, with relevant terms such as “part-time course,” “cancellation,” and “completing my exams.” However, the range is limited and several choices or spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, including “english learning,” “joined the your,” and “Thank you soo much.” These do not prevent the reader from understanding your purpose, but they reduce precision and the naturalness expected in a formal letter. Use established collocations such as “enrolled in a course” and “request cancellation,” and check spelling and capitalization. More precise language for the alternative course would also help, for example, specifying a course that fits your schedule after exams.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex forms, including the reason clause “because I heard from many my close friends and relatives” and the time clause “in next month, my exams are coming.” The main message remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction and articles: “I recently joined the your…” has an incorrect article, and “if there is any other course to develop…” is not formed naturally for this request. Capitalization of “I” is also inconsistent. Aim for more accurate sentence patterns, such as “I enrolled in your course” and “Could you let me know whether another course would be suitable?” Continue using complex clauses, but check articles, word order, and punctuation.
