IELTS Writing Task 1 question

You recently booked a part-time course at a college. You now need to cancel your booking.

Write a letter to the college administrator. In your letter:

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to request you that I would like to cancel a part-time course. I booked a French language course last week.

The reason for cancellation this course is that, I am in the last semester of my graduation, and I have more workload of completion of my assignments and project. So, I am unable to attend all the lectures and practical sessions. Moreover, during weekend I gave a commitment on a job regading my part-time availability.

Furthermore, I would be grateful if you could provide me different course details for the upcoming semester. So, I can schedule my lectures and job accordingly.

In addition to this, I would like to enroll in the cooking course from the next month and request you for booking if it is possible. On the top of that, I would be happy if you could transfer my credit in to the next enrollment.

Thanks for the consideration and please feel free to contact me if you need any further information.

Yours sincerely,

Patel

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.0

You cover all three requested points clearly. You identify the French language course, explain that final-semester assignments and a weekend job commitment prevent attendance, and ask about other courses, specifically cooking. The request to move your credit to a later enrolment also adds a useful practical detail. These ideas are relevant and sufficiently developed for the letter’s purpose. To make the response even more complete, clarify whether you are asking to reserve a place on the cooking course or only seeking information, since the letter asks about booking a different course. Overall, the administrator can understand both the reason for cancellation and what you would like to happen next.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter follows a clear progression: cancellation request, explanation, enquiry about future courses, and a polite closing. Paragraphing helps separate these functions, and linking expressions such as “Moreover” and “Furthermore” make the sequence easy to follow. Some transitions are less effective because they repeat or do not show a clear relationship between ideas. For example, “So” begins a sentence after the course-details request, while “In addition to this” and “On the top of that” add several requests in quick succession. Grouping the future-course enquiry, cooking-course booking, and credit-transfer request into one focused paragraph, with fewer and more precise connectors, would make the flow more natural.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal cancellation letter, including “cancel,” “upcoming semester,” “enroll,” and “transfer my credit.” The meaning remains clear, but some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural. For instance, “more workload of completion” is an awkward way to describe academic demands, and “gave a commitment on a job” does not express the work arrangement naturally. “Different course details” is also less precise than asking for information about available courses. Spelling errors such as “regading” and the phrase “On the top of that” reduce accuracy. Choosing more natural formal expressions and checking spelling would improve precision and fluency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the conditional request “I would be grateful if you could provide me…” and the reason introduced by “that.” The message is generally understandable, although some grammatical errors remain. In “I am writing to request you that I would like to cancel,” the verb pattern is incorrect; use “request that you cancel” or “ask to cancel.” The clause “The reason for cancellation this course is that, I am…” needs a preposition and should not place a comma after “that.” There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “during weekend” and “transfer my credit in to.” More accurate sentence patterns and punctuation would strengthen control.
