Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter about the cancellation of the part-time course that I booked at your college. Last month, I got admission in a computer science course. The duration of this course is four months. It consists three classes in a week. I want to enhance my technical skills to assist my further studies.
Although computer science course has a plethora of benefits which can help me to develop my intelligence in the use of electronic devices,I need to cancel this course because I did not read the requirement of this part- time study which are hard to comnplete for me. Firstly, it requires a own computer/ laptop which I do not have and without own devices student may not be eligible to do this study.
I would like to request you to give a different course which is suitable for me . and I want to do cooking course if you have a extra seat in it.
Thank you for your consideration to this letter.
Kind regards,
Dilpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover all three required points: you identify the computer science course, explain that its equipment requirement makes it unsuitable, and ask about joining a cooking course. The reason for cancelling is relevant and understandable, so the purpose of the letter is clear. The course details and your original aim to improve your technical skills add useful context. However, the explanation of the requirement could be more precise, and the request for another course is brief: “if you have a extra seat in it” does not clearly ask about availability, dates, or how to book. To strengthen the response, explain what you would like the administrator to do about the cancellation and ask directly for information about enrolling in the cooking course. The letter already shows some development, but the points are not equally extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter follows a generally logical order: you introduce the booking, give your reason for cancelling, and then ask about an alternative. The opening and closing also make the purpose and tone clear. Linking expressions such as “Although” and “Firstly” help connect ideas, and the paragraphs broadly separate the main stages of the message. Some connections are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “Although computer science course has a plethora of benefits” is long and makes the contrast harder to follow, while “. and I want to do cooking course” interrupts the flow of the final request. Use clearer paragraphing and simpler transitions, and connect the cancellation explanation directly to a specific request for next steps.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for this letter, including relevant terms such as “part-time course,” “technical skills,” “requirement,” and “suitable.” There are also attempts at less common vocabulary, such as “plethora” and “enhance,” showing some range. At times, though, word choice or collocation is inaccurate or too formal for a straightforward administrative letter. “Got admission in a computer science course” and “develop my intelligence in the use of electronic devices” do not express your meaning naturally; “enrolled in” and “improve my computer skills” would be clearer. Spelling and form errors such as “comnplete” and “part- time” also affect accuracy, though the message remains understandable. Aim for precise, natural phrases rather than elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple sentences and more complex structures, including the contrast introduced by “Although” and the reason clause with “because.” The main message is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “It consists three classes in a week” needs a preposition, and “which are hard to comnplete” has an unclear agreement pattern. Articles and sentence boundaries also need attention in “a own computer/ laptop” and “. and I want.” The long sentence beginning “Although computer science course…” combines several ideas and is difficult to control. Practise accurate article use, verb patterns, and punctuation, and divide longer sentences into clearer units. More consistent control of these forms would make the letter easier to read.
