Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to cancel my booking in the new part-time course that I booked few weeks back. On the first day of this month, I submited my form in the course of computer programming assuming it will be a full time course but after few days I got to know that it was actually a part-time course , a trial course from the college.

I am willing to cancel my booked seat in computer programming as I am no more intrested in this course and also I am thinking my future with another field of study. So, it will be so grateful if you cancel my booked seat in that part-time course and also want to take seat in the course which I am willing to have in. I am looking forward to my future in mining engineering so I want suggestion from you if our college have any course regarding it.

Yours sincerely,

Yatharth

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all three requested points: you identify computer programming, explain that you misunderstood the course format and are now pursuing another field, and ask whether the college offers mining engineering. The purpose of the letter is clear and relevant throughout. The explanation for cancelling is somewhat unclear, however: you say you assumed the course was full-time, but then add that you are “no more interested” in it, leaving the main reason uncertain. The request to book a different course is also not fully specific; you ask for a suggestion rather than clearly asking how to enrol or whether a suitable course is available. Clarifying your reason and making a direct enquiry about the alternative would develop the response more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a recognisable structure, with an opening, an explanation and request in the main paragraph, and an appropriate closing. The sequence is generally understandable: you introduce the cancellation, give background, and then mention your interest in mining engineering. However, several ideas are crowded into one paragraph, and the long sentence beginning “I am willing to cancel” combines cancellation, a change of study plans and a request for another place. This makes the relationship between the points less clear. Some linking, such as “also” and “So,” is repetitive or mechanical. Separate the cancellation explanation from the alternative-course enquiry, and use clearer transitions to guide the administrator through each request.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main purpose, including “part-time course,” “computer programming” and “mining engineering.” There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “I am writing this letter” and “I am looking forward to my future.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “cancel my booking in,” “cancel my booked seat,” and “thinking my future with another field of study.” Spelling errors such as “submited” and “intrested” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding the message, but they limit precision and naturalness. Prefer standard administrative phrases such as “cancel my enrolment” and “change my field of study.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, for example the sentence explaining what you assumed when submitting the form and the sentence beginning “as I am no more interested.” The overall meaning remains understandable, but errors occur in several sentence patterns. Examples include “I booked few weeks back,” which needs an article and a more complete time expression, and “if our college have any course,” where the conditional clause has an agreement error. The sentence “I am willing to cancel … and also want to take seat” also shifts subject structure and needs an article before “seat.” Review articles, verb agreement and parallel sentence construction, and break up long sentences to improve control.
