Student answer (Band 8.5)
Some people believe that purchasing a few expensive clothes is a better choice than buying many inexpensive ones. I agree with this view because high-quality clothing usually lasts longer, looks better, and is more environmentally friendly.
One of the main advantages of buying expensive clothes is their superior quality. They are often made from durable materials and are designed to last for many years. As a result, people do not need to replace them frequently, which can save money in the long run. For example, a well-made winter coat may cost more initially, but it can remain in excellent condition for several years, whereas a cheaper one may need to be replaced after just one season.
Another reason is that expensive clothes generally offer better comfort and appearance. High-quality fabrics fit better, feel more comfortable, and maintain their shape and colour after repeated washing. Wearing well-made clothing can also improve a person's confidence, especially during job interviews, business meetings, or other important occasions.
Furthermore, buying fewer clothes helps reduce waste and supports sustainable fashion. The fashion industry produces a large amount of textile waste every year because many people regularly replace cheap clothing. Purchasing fewer, high-quality items reduces unnecessary consumption and benefits the environment.
However, I acknowledge that cheaper clothes may be more suitable for people with limited incomes or for children who quickly outgrow their clothing. Nevertheless, whenever possible, investing in a few high-quality garments is a wiser decision.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that buying a small number of expensive clothes is preferable to purchasing many cheaper ones because they are more durable, comfortable, cost-effective over time, and environmentally responsible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each paragraph introduces a distinct, relevant argument—durability, comfort/appearance, and environmental impact—which are well-supported with logical explanations and examples, such as the comparison between a winter coat and cheaper alternatives. The counter-argument in the penultimate paragraph is handled effectively, acknowledging the validity of the opposing view while reinforcing your own stance. The ideas are well-developed and the response is balanced, demonstrating a strong grasp of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth, using effective cohesive devices such as 'One of the main advantages', 'Another reason is', and 'Furthermore'. Referencing is clear throughout, and the use of linking words is natural rather than mechanical. The introduction and conclusion are well-structured, providing a clear overview and summary of your position. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS essay. You use precise terms such as 'durable materials', 'unnecessary consumption', 'sustainable fashion', and 'cost-effective'. The language is natural and conveys your meaning accurately. While the vocabulary is sufficient and precise, it could be elevated further by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate for a clear and professional tone, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.5
The essay displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You use a variety of complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('whenever possible, investing...') and relative clauses ('which can save money in the long run'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly throughout. There is a good mix of simple and complex forms that flow well. The control over verb tenses and subject-verb agreement is consistent, and there are no significant grammatical slips that distract the reader.
