Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the recent years, i have seen this debate about buying expensive clothes rather than cheap ones. Some individuals prefer buying less but expensive clothes, but some believes to buy more but the cheap ones. I slightly agree to buy few but with good quality even though they are expensive.

In my opinion, the outfit that you wear represents your personality, so one should wear good quality clothes even though if we have to pay more. It doesn’t only shines your personality but gives you confidence also. As a result, you can see a change in your body language. For instance, whenever i have to meet someone or i have to represent something, i always prefer to wear best quality clothes.

Additionally, not just only for the appearance, the quality also matters. Expensive clothes come with a top-notch fabric that last long with you for long time.

Moreover, premium quality garments show your personality with extra charm and make your image good in other people’s mind, especially in business meetings or parties, where you have to represent your business. Therefore, it is mandatory to have some expensive, good-quality clothes in your wardrobe.

Inversely, there are some proportion of people who consider quantity over quality. They like to buy more clothes without even thinking of the quality. In their opinion, they can buy clothes so that they don’t have to repeat them. They ignore the quality as it does not matter to them.

To sum up in the end, i will agree to always shop the expensive clothes, as they give you premium quality, durability and enhance your overall personality. I always prefer comfort over money, therefore i will go with the fabric quality.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position in favor of buying fewer, higher-quality clothes. The main ideas—durability, confidence, and professional image—are relevant and supported with examples. However, the development is somewhat limited; the argument could be strengthened by exploring the economic or environmental implications of 'fast fashion' versus 'slow fashion' to provide more depth. The counter-argument regarding quantity is mentioned but remains brief. Overall, the response fulfills the requirements of the task, though it stays at a fairly general level of discussion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally', 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'Inversely' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the concluding paragraph is a bit repetitive in its phrasing. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body points, and the counter-argument, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas effectively.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some successful attempts at more sophisticated collocations like 'top-notch fabric' and 'premium quality garments'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'shines your personality' (which should be 'enhances' or 'reflects') and 'make your image good' (which is quite basic). The range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several recurring grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some believes') and punctuation/capitalization errors (e.g., the lowercase 'i'). Additionally, there are awkward phrasings like 'In the recent years' and 'even though if we have to'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be needed to reach the next band.
