Student answer (Band 6.5)

Clothing is considered as an important accessory for both men and women in the society. Some people tend to buy just a few expensive clothes rather than lots of cheaper clothes whereas some people think buying expensive clothes is waste of money as they get limited options when compared to the cheaper clothes. In this essay I will give you an explanation on both perspectives of clothing and will provide a conclusion based on my opinion.

Clothing plays a significant role in a one’s life as it showcases the personality and confidence of a person.Buying clothes has a different impact on both men and women.some people think buying expensive clothes will give you a shelf life where the money used for this can be used for other purpose. Example -In India 90% of working men prefer to have 2-3 pairs of clothes and wears them comfortably every alternate day to work.

In other words clothing shows power and beauty. Mostly women tend to have a closet full of clothes. They prefer to look new every single day. And buying the clothes depends on the style they are looking for rather than the cost of the product. For example most of the women working in the corporate world prefer to buy expensive clothes to brand themselves as they represent the company whereas the girls going to school prefer lots of different varieties of cheaper clothes as they can look different each day.

Buying expensive or cheaper clothes depends on one’s financial condition and the way they see the life as a young women doesn’t want to dress up in formal to college whereas an office consultant cannot wear skirts to office.

In my opinion everybody has a right to choose and it is absolutely fine to buy and showcase yourselves as clothes represent your confidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt but lacks a clear, consistent position. While the introduction mentions providing an opinion, the body paragraphs merely describe different perspectives (men vs. women, office vs. school) rather than arguing for or against the statement. The conclusion states that 'everybody has a right to choose,' which avoids taking a definitive stance on whether buying expensive clothes is 'better.' To improve, you must clearly state your position in the introduction and ensure every paragraph supports that specific argument with relevant reasoning and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The transition between the discussion of men's clothing and women's clothing is abrupt, and the connection to the prompt's core question is often lost. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'In other words' and 'For example,' but they are sometimes used mechanically or to introduce ideas that do not clearly advance the argument. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when shifting between different groups of people. Improved use of linking phrases to connect ideas to your main argument would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. You rely on basic terms like 'expensive clothes' and 'cheaper clothes' repeatedly. While there are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'corporate world' and 'financial condition,' the range is limited. There are also some awkward collocations, such as 'showcase yourselves' and 'give you a shelf life,' which sound unnatural. To reach a higher band, focus on using more sophisticated synonyms and idiomatic expressions related to consumer habits and fashion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in the society' should be 'in society'), subject-verb agreement issues ('men... wears them'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after periods). Some sentences are fragmented or lack clarity, such as 'as a young women doesn’t want to dress up in formal to college.' While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to lower the score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammar and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
