Student answer (Band 7.0)

It is often argued that it is better to buy a small number of expensive clothes instead of purchasing many cheaper ones. I completely agree with this opinion because high quality clothes last longer and are more environmentally friendly.

One of the major reason why I agree is that expensive clothes are usually made from better materials and last much longer. Because of this people do not need to replace them frequently , which saves money in the long run. For example, a well made winter jacket can be worn for many years, whereas a cheap quality jacket lose its shape or become damaged after a single season. Therefore, buying fewer high-quality clothes is good choice rather than buying cheaper one.

Another reason is that purchasing fewer clothes helps reduce waste and protects environment. Nowadays companies encourages people to buy cheap clothes that are quickly thrown away and create large number of textile wastage. In contrast, when individuals invest in durable clothing then they use clothes for longer period, which helps to reduce environmental pollution. For instance, many consumers buying a few branded items because they are more durable and have a lower environmental impact. Hence, purchasing superior quality attires helps to save the textile wastage pollution.

In conclusion, I strongly agree that buying a few expensive clothes is a better decision than purchasing many cheaper ones. This is because they provide better quality and value for money and help reduces environmental pollution. So people should buy branded clothes instead of buying inferior quality clothes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding durability and environmental impact are relevant and well-supported with examples, such as the comparison of a winter jacket and the mention of textile waste. The ideas are extended sufficiently to meet the requirements of the task. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the counter-argument or provide more nuanced analysis of the economic trade-offs, but the current development is solid and consistent with the requirements for a Band 7.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'In contrast', 'For instance', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly repetitive structure of the concluding sentences. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'environmentally friendly', 'durable', and 'textile wastage'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'superior quality attires' (attire is usually uncountable) and 'large number of textile wastage' (waste is uncountable). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, these occasional inaccuracies prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on collocations and the countability of nouns will help improve your lexical precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('companies encourages', 'jacket lose its shape', 'helps reduces') and missing articles ('protects environment'). These errors occur frequently enough to be noticeable but do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to third-person singular verb endings and the correct use of articles, which are essential for achieving a higher band score in grammatical accuracy.
