Student answer (Band 6.0)
I agree, that buying few expensive clothes is a better idea rather than buying too many cheaper clothes. It allows an individual to maintain a standard among the other people.
To begin with, people are adapting new fashion trends nowadays. They are buying only limited clothes but those are expensive. For example, youngsters do not want their closets to be occupied with more clothes. However, they continue to maintain there wardrobes with expensive clothes. Furthermore, communities believe that this action help them to maintain a standard in the society. Where people are being judged with the quality over quantity. Therefore, a significant number of people are adapting this culture of buying limited but expensive clothing.
However, Others argue that more number of clothes allow an individual to adapt versatility. It means having more number of clothes helps communities to have a huge collection of clothes. Therefore, whenever there is an occasion, the individuals can wear clothes accordingly. Moreover, it saves a huge amount of money. Whereas, in low price it helps to maintain one's wardrobe. Additionally, it has been seen that, having a significant number of clothes gets an attention to a person. It is a sign of a dressing sense and hygiene.
In conclusion, despite that fact that having to many cheaper clothes helps an individual to change his dress daily, having few expensive clothes is a sign of quality which says quality over quantity. Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of buying fewer, more expensive clothes. The ideas are relevant, such as the focus on social status and quality. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces the counter-argument but lacks depth in its rebuttal, and the conclusion introduces a new point about the 'importance of money' which was not previously discussed. To improve, ensure that each body paragraph fully explores the implications of your argument rather than just listing points. The response is balanced, but the reasoning could be more sophisticated to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central topic. Cohesive devices are used throughout, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, some transitions are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as 'However, Others argue' (capitalization error) and 'Where people are being judged' (fragmented sentence). The flow between sentences is generally clear, but the logical progression within paragraphs could be smoother. The use of referencing is occasionally imprecise, which slightly hinders the overall cohesion of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their opinion clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'fashion trends', 'versatility', and 'wardrobe'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'maintain a standard among the other people' (should be 'maintain a certain standard') and 'gets an attention' (should be 'attracts attention'). The range is sufficient to communicate the message, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Spelling is generally accurate throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' vs 'a'), pluralization ('more number of clothes'), and sentence fragments ('Where people are being judged...'). Some errors, such as 'helps them to maintain a standard' (should be 'helps them maintain'), are minor, but the cumulative effect of these inaccuracies impacts the fluency of the writing. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, as these are recurring issues throughout the response.
