Student answer (Band 6.5)

With the advancement in the online shopping, people tend to buy more and more clothes. It is believed that purchasing few costly attires rather than buying lots of economical one is a best thing. I strongly agree with this idea beacuse quality matter the most rather than quantity and better stitiching of expensive clothes.

One of the major reasons why people should focus on buying less clothes that are expensive instead of spending money on shopping of cheaper clothes is the quality of costly outfits. This is because most of the clothes available in the market which are expensive are designer and made by the well known brand. Such brand are known for the durability of their products in the fashion industries. For example, Aritiza is a popular clothing brand in Canada. Although the prices of its simple top is three times more than the other cheaper store in this nation, the clothes look like brand new even after three four wash. Therefore, people should consider fewer expensive clothes.

Another compelling reason is the better tailoring. To explain it, costly attires are made in the factories where the manufacturer focus on the stitching quality and provide wide range of sizes. People of any height and weight can easily find their sizes in branded showrooms. However, the economial clothes do not stitch by the professional, owing to which such attires look cheap on the people. Therefore, buying costly clothes is a better choice over the economical one.

In conclusion, it is beneficial for people to buy less but expensive clothes because branded outfits not only have superior quality and durability but also fit well for all kind of individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. The arguments regarding durability and tailoring are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of Aritzia. However, the development is somewhat repetitive; the points about quality and stitching overlap significantly. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the counter-argument or discuss the economic/environmental implications of 'fast fashion' to provide a more nuanced and comprehensive discussion. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, ensuring the position remains consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the major reasons,' 'Another compelling reason,' and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences could be smoother. For instance, 'Such brand are known' lacks proper pluralization, which affects the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at topic-specific language like 'durability,' 'tailoring,' and 'designer.' However, there are several instances of awkward phrasing and word-choice errors, such as 'purchasing few costly attires' (attire is usually uncountable) and 'economical one' (economical refers to saving money, whereas 'cheap' or 'inexpensive' is more accurate for clothing). Spelling errors like 'stitiching' and 'beacuse' also occur. To improve, focus on collocations and ensure that word forms are used correctly in context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('quality matter,' 'Such brand are known') and article usage ('the online shopping,' 'the professional'). Some sentences are slightly clunky, such as 'the prices of its simple top is three times more.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring accuracy in basic grammar would be beneficial.
