Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern era, some people believe that it is better to buy a few costly clothes, rather than buying cheaper clothes in bulk. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and conclude with my opinion.

On one hand, people who believe in quality not in quantity, will go for luxury clothing. As these people prefer high-end fabric which is more comfortable while wearing them. Moreover, they are brand-conscious and will prefer branded company clothes. These people do not prefer more funky or chunky types of garments, but follow a decent fashion. So, they will spend more money on clothes and avoid buying too many cheaper garments. For example, recently one of the big companies was accused of selling clothes which contained harmful chemicals in their fabric and were cheaper clothes so people try to avoid cheap garments because of the fabric used in them might not be of good quality.

On the other hand, people who buy cheaper clothes might be more into fashion, as they will be keeping up with the trend, and will prefer cheaper but trendy clothes. They might be fond of wearing different clothes on a regular basis. However, they would not go for quality as they prefer quantity. They also might not be willing to spend more money on luxury garments.

In conclusion, I agree that it is better to buy few expensive clothes rather than lots of cheap clothes. As I believe in the quality of material used to make expensive clothes as the fabric would be made from the best available resources

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the benefits of quality and the trend-focused nature of cheaper clothing, the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The introduction states you will discuss both viewpoints, but the prompt asks for your opinion on whether it is better to buy a few expensive items or many cheap ones. You successfully provide this in the conclusion, but the essay structure feels slightly repetitive in its explanation of 'people who believe in quality' versus 'people who buy cheaper clothes'. To reach a higher band, ensure each paragraph provides a more nuanced exploration of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition from discussing brand-conscious people to the example about harmful chemicals is slightly abrupt. Additionally, the final sentence of the essay is incomplete, which impacts the overall coherence of the conclusion. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a strong, unified focus will help improve the flow of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'brand-conscious', 'luxury clothing', and 'high-end fabric'. However, there is some repetition of basic words such as 'clothes', 'cheaper', and 'people'. To improve, try to incorporate more precise synonyms or related collocations. For example, instead of repeating 'cheaper clothes', you could use 'fast fashion', 'budget-friendly garments', or 'mass-produced items'. Some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'funky or chunky types of garments', which does not quite fit the context of fashion discussions. Expanding your vocabulary to include more sophisticated, topic-specific collocations will elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'people who believe in quality not in quantity, will go for...' (the comma is unnecessary) and '...as the fabric would be made from the best available resources' (the sentence is incomplete). You also have some minor issues with article usage and prepositional phrases, such as 'while wearing them'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on proofreading your work to ensure all sentences are complete and punctuation is used correctly to connect clauses.
